Perch float-n-flies
« on: 09/28/13 14:15 UTC »
These are my perch float and fly jigs, I posted them here as they can double as crappie jigs too due to their size. They are made with a 1/32 minnow heads that I cut the collars off of, and use a size #4 sickle hook and they were tied with black 140 denier flat waxed nylon, specifically Danville flymaster thread. There are elements that you can't see because of my lack of picture taking skills but they are there. The heads are powder coated with a custom blend of paint with a little bit of black on the top for the baitfish effect, the color I call "wild perch" consist of a blend of yellow, metallic gold, and clear powder, I think it looks good but I still want to try a little candy green in with it but for now it is ok. Anyway, I used sculpin olive buck tail for the body and added olive pearl krystal flash for the accent and then finished it off with wood duck tone mallard flank on the sides. I tried this pattern using yellow buck tail but it was too bright and didn't look natural but the olive seems to work good, now I have to let the fish decided if it  looks good or not.

Those look awesome.

How does the float-n-fly work. Do you cast it or what? Work it slow or fast? Cold or warm water?

LOL Sound like my three year old grandbaby with all the questions. :D

Thanks for the kind words, the float-n-fly is a set up you cast, it is primarily a cold water technique but it can be used year round but warmer months the fish tend to be more active so there are better options. I will say though, if you have bass or crappie suspended or feeding on small prey items then the float-n-fly will work. A few different ways to use it depending on the species and/or water depth, if I'm fishing crappie and they are moving up shallow then I'll use a fixed float with about 2' of line under the float, if the fish are deeper then I'll use a slip float with a small bobber stop, the same for bass, if they are suspended over deep water I'll use a slip bobber with the stop set at the depth where the fish are at. I do use it in the river where 6' is deep, in that case I will use the fixed bobber system but if you check out you tube there should be a few videos on the float-n-fly technique.

Small jaw, we have to get together and discuss the float and fly! Im only great at 2 things.. 1 we can't talk about on a family board and well my wife might be uncomfortable about me talking about it  :-X  and 2 is the float and fly....
Its all about the float not so much the fly. I wish I was home so I could post some picks of what I'm talking about. Beautiful jigs! That color could imitate anything from crawfish, perch to shad awesome.

X2 with Denny on Mo's comment :D :D

The float and fly/jig/trout worm are very popular out here in so cal when trout season somes along.  except most of the fisherman out here use water bubbles for the float. some will fill them 1/2 or 3/4 full so they have a slow sink rate and use a slow wind with pause retrieve.
