My saltwater jigs.

Most of the jigs i nake are for saltwater fishing.
Some of them are as small as 1oz and I make some jigs up to 40oz. 10-16 oz are the most common for Halibut and 3-12 oz for rockfish.
lately I have gotten into custom and semi-custom molds from Shawn Collins and some other custom mold makers. Mainly because there is no alternative to get the sizes and styles I want.
I really wish Do-It would make some larger saltwater jigs.
I do have the Ultra minnow in the 5,6,and 8oz as well as the 16 and 20 oz spire points.
When your tide swings are as big as we have Here in Alaska the bigger stuff becomes neccessary.
A good tide day for where I usually fish is anything less that 10' of tidal movement though it can reach over 30' on a heavy minus tide day.

Colors are super glow white and Chrome powder paint from Pro Tec.

I have some rods like that.
I did buy some lighter rods for this season and I do like them better than the beefier rods.
With the right jig though you can fish tides other prople can't fish unless they use 3+# weights.
A friend was out on a charter with some of my 25 oz jigs and the others on the boat had 3# weights and big bait chunks.
He used no bait and a jig weighing roughly 1/2 the weight and caught more fish than the others on the boat combined. Granted the women on the boat could only catch a few fish before they were wore out.
That was part of the reason for designing and having the custom mold built.

Nice looking stuff!  I may need to go heavier than the ones I have this winter.  On the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, the winter fishing for rockfish is usually around the 50 foot deep range.  How much weight would you use for that in say a 3 foot chop?

Hey Jeff.. We use those here in So Cal for winter rock cod fishing. And honestly we use 6-8oz. and thats to fish 200+ft of water.

The tides often have as much or more effect than the wind and waves where I fish.
Not knowing your tides I would guess 4oz or 6oz would probably be plenty.
Often for our rockfish getting down to them quickly can help.
You guys catch more pelagics or non pelagics?

The mold is from Collins Customs.
I make the squid heads in 1,2,3,4,6,8,10,12,16 oz in both Horizontal and Vertical versions.
I don't recall what the ones in that pic weighed.

The 40oz isn't fished often.
When it is it's just bounced off for bottom in a similar fashion as the halibut bait/weight setups. It is not jigged aggressively.
The 16,20,24 are though.
On those days when the tide is really ripping it's either go big or go home!
This time of year is a bit early for bottom fish. But it is also the time of the big spring tides.
A big tide means close to 40' of water difference between high and low.
A good day is anything less than 10' of difference.
We have the worlds second highest tides here in Cook inlet.
The fish can get pretty big though.
20# fish are considered small.lol
