new to soft plastic
« on: 10/06/13 21:56 UTC »
I'm thinking about buying the starter kit but am not sure on colors or glitters to choose. I'm from the Midwest and was wondering what 4 colors and what 4 glitters would be recommended to start. Also, is regular formula the best with this soft plastic as I mostly bass fish? Thanks in advance for all your help.

First off welcome to the nut house. What part of the Midwest do ya hail from? I rest my read in warrensburg Mo. Is the mold a crappie or bass one? For a starter bass kit I would say watemelon , chartreuse, and black. Glitter...  would say black and orange are my favorites. Colors are cheap I would get what ever fancyed me.

Welcome Lunchbox,

Did Mo mention that he's color blind?  I'd probably throw red or tomato into the colors and would definitely add a red and a green to the glitters.
Until next time.

Welcome to the nut house Lunchbox..

I would say medium plastic.. Colors.. Hmmmm that's a loaded question because everyone has their favorites.. I would Watermelon, Pumpkin Seed, Grape or Junebug, and tomato. Glitters I would go red, black in .015 & .045, and ocean. Again these are the colors I would chose, reason being most of the baits I used to buy were those colors..

You will get some great advice from the guys and gal(don't want to forget Buffy) on this board. Don't be afraid to ask anything no matter how simple you may think it is. If you don't know or understand how to do something, or why something is happening, do a search or just ask. Everyone is friendly, just want out for some of the guys on here, they have been know to be jokesters  ;D

Welcome
you will soon tag this site as one of your favorites. As far as colors and glitters what is it that you use the most?

I haven't seen this portion of the question answered yet(which formula plastic) so I will give you my best answer. I only use regular and I mainly bass fish, sometimes I fish for northern pike and the regular formula works excellently for both applications. I find that the regular formula allows the baits to produce plenty of action and also be very durable.

Colors. Green pumpkin  black. Grape.  Watermelon.
Glitter. Green. Black red blue

Yes med is good to start.  I have started mixing med and soft. To get that middle of the road thing.

The designer of the Do-it molds (formally Caney Creek) Jason Barnes used to post that the molds are designed for medium. That's all I use.

I agree on buying the colors that you currently buy the most baits in and have the most confidence in. For me that's black, silver smoke, watermelon brown and chartreuse . The glitter that I use the most (by far) is black, blue, red and silver.  I also like rainbow glitter for when I can't make up my mind! (it's great is clear or very light silver).

I would also suggest white..but it's a tough color to get right...so save that for a few months from now.

Make sure you get a thermometer  :D (I always say that!) and get your plastic to 350 so it fully changes state (or you will get cloudy or sticky baits) but don't let it get too hot (380) or it will start to "burn" and you will have problems with yellowing...so temperature is important.

Read and follow ALL of the postings in safety! It's a fun, rewarding hobby ....but do it safely!

Good luck...and remember we all have done it "wrong" ...more than once....so read up..and ask questions. You will be amazed how good your baits will turn out.

I appreciate all the input. I'm sure there will be many more questions once I get started. Thanks again
