What a gale. lol
A friend and I headed out at 6 this morning to fish the docks on Lake Pepin. While dressing for the wind we kept in mind that the forecast has been yacking rain and snow or both mixed for about a week. We didn't don the rain gear since its just a short walk back for it had the need arise. It didn't. In fact, if it weren't for the 40 mph blow [or near to it] we would have been too warm at the 38 degrees we started at.
The fish? It was, as the topic title says, game on. We got a mixed bag including crappies, sunfish, perch and walleye. We got some sumo crappies today that laid out to about 14 inches. One 3 pound waldo came home for dinner tonight. The sunfish size was down a bit from a week ago but this frontal fishing always seems to mess with the larger fish in that category. An 11 inch perch made its appearance too.
Purple with a chartreuse tail. Period. It didn't matter what the bait was as long as it was this color combination. Period. 1.75" small frys did damage as did a couple other baits of the same length. The purple portion of this color is 4 drops of X2 midnight blue with 4 drops of X2 purple and a drop of X2 red in a 4 ounce batch along with .015 red and purple glitter and just a snitch of purple hi lite. The tails were shot first using 5 drops of X2 chartreuse and 2 drops of X2 green chartreuse and one drop of regular green. The fish have been leaning towards liking a chartreuse tail section that has a green over-tone to it. Gotta feed'em what they want.
Anyway, it was a wild time with the wind, but the fish and the baits made a nice day out of it. It was nice to stay dry too.
