Couple Questions
« on: 11/03/13 15:36 UTC »
Have a few crappie questions for you guys. For the most part I bass fish but once tournament season slows down it's time to fill the freezer. I live on an extremely clear lake and the crappie stay 18 to 30 feet deep except for a short period in the spring. That being said they are picky about which baits they will hit. My best grub is a 1.5" Bobby Garland baby shad. I pour my own heads and was thinking about pouring my plastics. Which mold is similar to this bait? Would any of you be willing to sell me a few of the different crappie baits so I could actually fish them and see which is best? I'm not talking about a lot of baits just enough to test before purchasing a mold.

It might be a week or so till I get to em but if you want just pm me your address

Bass...

If you like the Garland shad, you'll love this small fry bait. The small fry's tail is triangular from the body to the tip and it reflects light like there's no tomorrow and the tip action is what fires fish up once they notice the flash. I fish crappies almost exclusively all year and in lots of different water types. The 1.75" small fry is in the top 3 of my pet baits and has been a very consistent producer even in cold water. Last fall a friend and I fished on the Mississippi River two days before ice shut off the landing. We got skunked on the walleyes we thought we catch but we caught crappies like crazy and the small fry and thumper shads were all we had in the boat that was crappie sized. I thought they'd be too large given the super cold water but they hammered the baits.

The small fry series of baits are all super easy to shoot and with a lamination plate or some free-hand pouring like I prefer you can cook up some very nice baits and in colors that Garland never even thought of. I recommend this bait to a lot of people as a first time mold simply because it has so much to offer.

The 1.75 or my favorite is the 2.5 fry will be good choices. The baby shad (which is 2") is probably the best seller around here, but I would fish the 2.5 fry over it any day.

I agree the 2.5 is my favorite. I never fish the 3.5 fry when the shad are big in the winter I mean never  :P
My order goes like this....the 1.75 in spring. The 2.5 in the summer-fall and the big dawg 3.5 in the winter . If it super cold then the 1.75 comes back into play.  Hand grenades when all else fails, green ones  seem to work the best
