crappie baits for florida?
« on: 11/12/13 07:34 UTC »
My dad spends winters in florida on the st johns river, and enjoys fishing for crappie and panfish.  He fishes pads n weeds with live bait currently.  Would the small fry or another mold be best for fishing under a float?  Or perhaps you know of a more effective method of fishing that type of water.

I like the small fry and crappie carrot under a float. I suspect they use some pretty big Crappie Carrots down there compared to here up north!

If you get the crappie carrot, remind him  that sometimes rigged at an angle (not flat like you would normally do...or for that matter tail straight up and down) works well because it causes the bait to really dart erratically if the bobber is twitched or movement from waves.

When I went back to Jacksonville last spring we took the boys out with 2.5 fry and trout worms. Anything white/chartreuse worked wonderfully. Lived in Jax for 8 years, wish I had the opportunity and avenues I do now back then.

Be careful though, the St. John's holds some mammoths!  My son hooked into a 6lb LM with his Spiderman pole and it about took him in the water lol.

The 1.75 to 2.5 inch Small Fries, Crappie sized carrots, the Flap jack, or Stinger Wutz-It would do nicely.
If he likes bream fishing as well I would lean toward the Small Fries.  If he likes to do a little spec and /or bass fishing as well as crappie fishing I would lean toward the Stinger Wutz-It, larger Flap Jack, or larger crappie carrots.  All are excellent baits in my opinion.

Thanks for all the replies, I guess they use 2 to 2.5 inch minnows  for most of their panfishing.  I already have a 3 inch carrot and swim fry.  I will check into the 2.25 fry and crappie carrot.  Thanks

You should be spot on with these two choices.
