problems with salt clumping in pot
« on: 11/14/13 13:36 UTC »
hey folks, tried to add some salt to a couple batches of plastics. I followed the advice on the forum about powdering the salt with a coffee grinder and cooking the moisture out, when I try to stir it in to the plastic it is clumping up and forming little rocks in the pot. anyone had this problem and if so did you find a solution? thanks
mike

I powder my salt for baits also. I clean my coffee grinder out after every use by banging it on the table to loosen all the salt that become compact. Also add the salt to the raw plastic and stir well to get it mixed in before heating.

Try sprinkling in a bit at a time and stir as you do it.

KP, I think you maystill have moisture in your salt. You may also be using too much salt. Try backing off the amount a little.

I found that thats what will happen when you grind your own salt, you need to find the finest grind you can, I'm not sure where you can find a "micro" fine salt in smaller quantities though.

If you think you might have moisture in your salt.  get a cookie sheet and pour your salt onto it and place it in the oven at the lowest temp.  Keep the oven door propped open with a wooden spoon or something.  Every 5 minutes or so turn the salt with the spoon.  That should pull the moisture right out.  Also try putting rice or something in your salt to keep the moisture out of it.
