Nuts are out early
« on: 11/16/13 14:12 UTC »
I just read elsewhere that someone ventured out on less than 2" of ice in the St. Cloud region and is now in an ICU fighting to stay alive. What some of these people are thinking just sails right over my head.

Every year we see stories like this. Or worse. All of it because they have this need to be the first idiot on the ice to fish. Knowing that this stuff is a given to happen takes the fun out of ice fishing.

Tom I wait until there is a solid 3" to 6's before I will walk on it. Any fish or animal is not worth your life. There's only one person that can walk on water and were not him. mike 8)

I hear now that a second one has taken the dip. Hurry, hurry, hurry.....always in a rush to fish the ice. I've been thru the ice three time in my life and I don't ice fish any more. Too much work, too much danger, too little to gain.

Water temps here are low 60's in the main channel; and mid 60's on sunny days in the shallows.

I'm with ya Tom. I don't ice fish either. Here in Ohio it's not worth it. I remember the preacher telling me once to keep my feet on solid ground. I thought that was good advice.

I feel that if there is still open water fishing within a 3 hour drive from my house - the ice fishing could wait.  And yes - there is still good open water fishing!
Take somebody fishing soon!

I've sold all of the flashers, portable shacks and power augers along with all of the ice rods and many of the reels and much of the tackle. I still staff for JBlures a little and have a full line of JB's ice tackle so if I really want to go, I take a 5' ultralight rod with some 2 pound nanofil line with the box of JB stuff, some of MY plastics and a hand auger and stand out on the ice. I fished very successfully on the open ice for many years without all the bells and whistles when I was younger. I didn't have any of the fancy fixings. It was colder then too. After staffing for many of the companies making shelters, augers and electronics as well as tackle and rods for many years I just wanted to get back to basic fishing. Basically, the more crap it takes to fish, the further away from fishing ice fishing gets. I'm confident doing it like I did years back. I know people today who turn around and go home if they run out of propane for the heater or if the battery goes dead on the flasher. These people simply don't have any basic fishing skills period or they could figure things out when technology abandons them temporarily. There are a lot of people on the ice today who call themselves die hard ice anglers, but take away all the technology and creature comforts and they can't find their butt with both hands let alone fish.

I'll still slip out for a couple hours of fishing on the ice occasionally and usually have fish that night for dinner. I know the areas I choose to fish and I understand that fish I am after and that my friends comes with a cost of $0.0 in technology but it does take years of experience. Part of that experience is knowing when to stay off ice.

And Tommy.....open water fishing in the winter makes those ice anglers look like whimps, which of course they are. ;D

I am a die hard ice fisherman. I love the sport and you could not pay me enough to give it up.
But I do try and do things as safely as possible.
While I have a lot of Gizmos and gadgets I don't need them to catch fish. They do help me catch more fish though.
It is also nice that with a shanty and heater I get my wife to go with me more often.
It surely isn't worth my life though and I don't need to prove my manhood by going out on unsafe ice.
Here in Alaska we have people who go out on the ocean in smaller and smaller boats.
There was a guy who wanted to know if a 9' boat was adequate for some Halibut fishing. I know he is nuts just for asking that question. One must also realize a 14' Kayak is worlds apart in terms of design and capability that a 14' Jon boat.
Why is it people buckle their seatbelt  and drive the speed limit but then venture out on 2" of ice or hit the water in inadequate craft or any other manner of stupid things they sometimes do in the great outdoors?

I ice fish all the time, do I go out on 2" of ice.... yes. but it is in shallow channels with max depth of maybe 3 FOW and life jacket, throwable and buddy system. It is sad that every year you hear about people taking the ice for granted
