If I have a big dent or other bad pour on a 3.5" swim shad and the back is ok; I cut the back off and it makes an excellent trailer.  If the whole truth be told I have cut the backs off of several good swim shad to use as trailers.  I do this rather than use the whole swim shad to cut down on plastic bulk.  I think you get a little better skirt action and maybe get a little better hook set.  I admit it may all be in my mind though.
