10" Ribbon Tail help
« on: 12/12/13 18:25 UTC »
I'm getting flashing around the body of every bait because of the big vent all around it. If I lower temps then the tails don't fill out. I haven't been stuck like this on a mold for I don't know how long? Same problem with the 10.5" as well. Any magic formula I'm missing?

I have the 10.5 and don't have any issues. Have had it for a few weeks now and as long as the plastic is hot enough it shoots perfect. As you said, if mold is cold and plastic isn't hot you don't get a complete tail. No flash problems for me. I do use four clamps on this big mold.

Are you using medium plastic and what brand? I'm wondering if the fact that I'm using thinner plastic is the issue.

They can be touchy sometimes, but once you're on to them it's a good go. Cold molds or plastic leads to incomplete tails.  Hot plastic or too much pressure can lead to some flashing in the body vent.  Warm molds, 360ish degree plastic and moderate pressure has always worked for me.

Someone else here may have other tips or tricks for you but if all else fails get a hold of me and we'll try to work it out for you.

Thanks,

Jerry

I've got the 7" and the 10" rt molds and don't recall any flashing problems whatsoever.  Make sure you're shooting into a warm mold that's clamped well.  These molds shoot really well and I don't think you need a lot of pressure on the injector.

In other words, ditto on what Basskat said.
Until next time.

I'm going to keep playing and see if I can get it. Going to try hot with little or no pressure. I think maybe I'm too used to shooting the 7" and the 4.75" that doesn't have the vent.

I have the 10 and the 7 and have no problems. Both shoot well.

The 7" I can put enough pressure on to fill out the tail but the 10" if I apply that much pressure it flashes all around the body vent. Just tried 350 with little pressure and got no flashing but half tails and that's with warm molds. Still playing.

I'm also using softer plastic which is making the formula slightly different as well I'm sure.

I've got it very close! The tails are filling out and the flashing isn't as severe.

I think the softer plastic being more runny is making it want to flash easier. At this point I'm pretty confident that if I was using medium I'd have no flashing at all.

I like medium plastic but the tournament fisherman can't stand it and complain about hook sets. I personally think it works just fine but hey you've got to give them what they want.

I won several $$$$ on medium plastic this past year. I pour a 10" round worm, kinda like a giant senko, and the bass on Pickwick love it. I poured a few of these in soft and the bait just wouldn't hold up.
