I'm with you and catch on it all. I do a mix and it works out pretty good. The only benefit I personally really find in the soft plastic is in finesse fishing and dead sticking. When the bites really tough sometime that little flow the most minimal current can give it is really the ticket.

With the 10.5 & 12.0 inch worm the open vent areas want to flash a little for me.  An extra clamp at midpoint helps, but doesn't completely eliminate the flashing.  It is fairly easy to remove so I just pull it off; but I am not making big runs either.  I use medium @ 350 degrees, normal pressure.  Tails always fill out.  I would rather pick flashing than have incomplete tails.

Flashing is a huge pain for me given the amount of baits I'm making but I think I've got it almost to a point that it's manageable.

I use two large Irwin clamps on the 10.5" mold. I shoot it cold and have complete tails with no flashing either. I put a little worm oil on my finger and rub it into the tail section of the mold on both halves. I use medium plastic.

I won several $$$$ on medium plastic this past year. I pour a 10" round worm, kinda like a giant senko, and the bass on Pickwick love it. I poured a few of these in soft and the bait just wouldn't hold up.

That's what I say too. With my 10" worms I make a 3/8 oz shaky head with a 6/0 hook. You skin hook that worm and it doesn't matter how hard that plastic is your coming through it. Myself I would rather have the worm hold up a little longer and not be messing with it all the time. But if that's what they say they want, then give it to them. But it's all in their head.

I do prefer a softer compound for finesse baits. The softer baits will have better action with minimal movement. I guess that's why there's numerous plastics out there, too each his own.

try clamping in the middle of the tail  & just behind the nose of the bait.. i use padded c clamps with my molds & they do just fine even when i hittin the mold fast .as far as the tails filling put your mold in a toaster oven until its warm but still grabable to the touch
