Cold water plastics
« on: 12/28/13 10:41 UTC »
Hello all just wondering if any of you who fish cold waters in spring use a super soft plastic for more action or stay with medium plastic. I was thinking going to super soft for the beginning of tourney season as it is really cold here in Illinois. Thought I would ask others what they prefer.

 Thanks.

I do mostly small baits and basically use nothing but the soft. I know that some baits might have a better action if a medium or firm plastic is used and some of the stiffer plastics have more resiliency in cold water applications. You don't indicate what fish will be sought and species/baits will make a difference as to what plastic is best suited. If you are talking crappie sized baits without a tail like a twister or K grub, soft will probably do you best. If you are shooting twister-tailed baits I'd go with medium just for durability and less time in the box when time matters and because I think medium gives those broader tails more action. I'm in Minnesota and took a couple 2.5" and 3" K grubs shot in soft down to the river behind me and played with them to see how they looked in the water...how the action was. The water temp was 35 degrees and the tails were awesome in action.

Hello ODA!  Where in IL do you live?  I live in IL and all I use is the medium plastic.  I have not noticed much of a difference in the cold weather.  I don't fish tournaments, but have customers that do.  No complaints so far.

ctom I will be Bass fishing and the water temps are usually 35 to 40 degrees when we start fishing. I will be using modified lil toad stickers behind a jig mostly. Just was wondering if there was a preference between super soft and medium in colder water. CrabbyBass I am in Bourbonnais. If fish Mazonia a lot and also the Kankakee River. Thanks for the reply s.

Best listen to those who are in your back yard and fish what you fish. I was going to say medium but wasn't certain what the target fish were.

And speaking of ice fishing.....are you doing any good there yet? I heard that Yeoman's was having a tough start and that Stoddard just got going. I don't know how reliable the informant is though.

The ice fishing over the holiday has been "epic". 3 of the best days I've ever had. 45 degrees here on the ice today...I even got a sun burn!

Going to come to a quick stop with the forecast of 3 degrees by tomorrow am and only single digit highs for the rest of the week. The cold is bad enough (it was -3 when I met my buddy on Monday morning) but with the high winds forecasted..a super low wind chills.....I'm going to make swim jigs tomorrow and plastics on Monday.

I get to drive to Centerville tomorrow....above St. Paul about 8 miles on 35. Sounds like I'm headed right into the teeth of it.

I'd like to sit in a port some morning with you if we can swing it.
