Be Safe, Stay Warm
« on: 01/05/14 11:37 UTC »
We are forecast to get the coldest weather we have had in 20 years in North Alabama over the next three days .  We just don't get down to zero here  :o.  You good folks up north are supposed to get it much worse.  I hope that every one is safe if you have to travel and has appropriately weatherproofed their houses, cars, boats, pets, livestock, etc.   So much for global warming.

Its going to be a bear up here Paul. If you aren't accustomed to the kind of cold that's coming, best to stay out of it.

I think we are close to our daytime high for the day at -8 degrees. We've gotten a little wind now too. The wind is supposed to ramp up later in the day and temps are supposed to go waaaaaaay dooooooown. Ma and I ran some errands and got back home about a half hour ago and it really wasn't all that bad if you were in the sun and not in any windy areas. Step into a windy or shady spot and the difference is stark. A word of caution from up here where we have to deal with this all winter: if any of you in the path of this cold has a circulation issue, as in blood flow, keep your hide covered up if you have to be in it but its simply better to stay inside and not put yourself in harms way. At 0 degrees it takes less than 10 minutes for frostbite to start and that time frame shortens proportionately with temps lower than 0. With what we are to expect in Minnesota frostbite will begin on exposed flesh in less than 5 minutes. Hypothermia in those without proper clothing will begin in less than 10 minutes.

I like to have Al Gore here. I'd strip his knickers off and set him on my porch for three or four hours and then ask him about his revelations on global warming.

I had to laugh ...those scientist who were rescued off that ship stuck in the ice were on their way to study the effects of global warming at the pole!! I've got to get up at 2:00 am to head for work (50 mile commute).. city buses always run. At lease im inside tomorrow; Im the dispatch; hope the worst of it comes now so the plows have a chance to clear it off before I start sending buses out!

Carole and I were scheduled to work our antique shop tomorrow. That would have meant that we' had to travel 60 miles in this nice air. We just got a call that the mall where the shop is located has been closed as of this afternoon until Tuesday...maybe as far out as Weds. Boy is that good news.

We are in a warming trend. It's only about 1.4F increase from 1980, but on a global scale that is huge. As I type this it's a blizzad out side my window so I get how the global warming thing is hard to believe.
Summer here in Mi can reach triple digits, so it's only fair that we share some our cold with you southern guys. :)

It was a balmy 0 when my buddy and I were setting up the fish house this am. Warmed all the way up to 1 degree by early afternoon. It was sunny and his 2 man Clam is black and the heater made it pretty nice inside.

Fish were biting like crazy, but the wind started up and that made us a bit nervous (wind chill is VASTLY underrated!!!). It was snot freezing on the mustache cold on the way back to the truck!

Forecast to go -25 tonight with wind chills to -60. "High" of -15 tomorrow. Going to work tomorrow am will not be pleasant! Even worse will be going back out to the truck at lunch (got to start it to try and keep the battery ok) and going home it will be too cold for the heater to make much difference!

I bet I'll be able to hang beef in my office tomorrow! I'm going wearing toe heaters in my shoes!

Northern IL here.

The wind is starting to howl now.  Road crews have discontinued efforts until daylight.  That 4-6 inches of snow we got yesterday is spread on every road we have right now.  I went to the store about 2pm and it was 8 and falling, below zero now and falling fast.  The wind has to be in the 30 mph range right now.  Stay safe guys, it is not very nice out there.

Mid-60's without a cloud in the sky...high 30's at night.  Took TPO to Reno yesterday and went over Donner Summit, about 7,300 feet elevation..only saw a few patches of snow at the summit.  It should be about 10 - 12 feet this time of the year.  The Truckee River appears to be at late summer flows and Spaulding Lake appeared almost empty.  This mornings weather report called for sunny skies for the next 7 days...no rain.  Even in draught years we get wet every now and then.  Not so this year.
Until next time.

Maybe we all need to load up and go see Denny this week.  I am sure he would put us all up, feed us and take us all fishing.   ;D

Friday night was down at -19 below.  Sat was -15.  Right now we're at 32 degrees and Freezing Rain!!!!!!! and then back to the deep freeze starting late Monday afternoon.  50 degree swings are not FUN!!!!  Start back to work tommorrow after a week and half off and I'm really not looking forward to the 50+ mile drive in the morning, then turn around when we're supposed to start getting it again for another 50+ mile drive home.  Only 4 1/2 yrs to go till retirement!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stay safe all!!!!!!!!!
