What do you use? Soft or medium plastisol?
« on: 01/07/14 23:37 UTC »
What plastisol are you guys using? Medium or soft? I'm going to order some of both to test it for myself but I thought I'd ask as well.  Can you mix the two to get a hybrid?  Does the soft produce a lot more action than the medium?

Thanks
Brady

I'd say get the medium an if you just want a little more action buy and use some softener instead of using the soft formula. But then again I use bigger baits and the medium works for me, especially with the HDA. but I've seen of some guys using the soft for the small baits to get that extra action. So I guess it depends on how and what your fishing for

If you're making baits for yourself and don't mind replacing them after catching a fish or two, then soft. You can take the old plastics you made and remelt them into new baits too.
There's been a discussion before, and I believe it's true; that a fish will less likely spit out your bait or as fast when using a softer plastic vs a harder one.

All of the baits that were designed by Jason Barnes (the former owner) where designed for medium.

I use Do-it medium for all my baits....including crappie and bluegill baits.

I fish Saltwater so I have a place for Hard/Saltwater plastic, but I also fish the Fresh so other plastic has a place.  I have Soft and Hard, and when I want Medium/Regular I just mix Soft and Hard at 1:1...50/50.

I like my solid Frogs to be Soft...my DES baits in either Soft or Regular...most Saltwater baits in Hard, other than some cold water slow stuff...alot of minnow/baitfish imitations get Regular...it varies, so I carry Hard and Soft.

Primarily soft here because my baits are primarily small. I would like to try a gallon of medium and hard for specific shoots in walleye molds though. Some day....

I've always wonder about (among other things!) if soft works better on some tail baits...or will soft not let the tail spring back to the  middle? Or does the tail "swim" is such a way that it stays pretty centered anyway???

Along that same line...if the tails are in soft ...and the plastic floats (which Do-it plastic does) would the tails float upwards vs. horizontal?

Or...in deep water with increased water pressure...would the tails be pushed downwards vs. horizontal?

The only field observation that I've made is with the Nano and the Small Fry ice fishing and using my ice fishing camera. Bottom line is that the tails really quiver in medium and they are nicely centered at rest. I've been able to observe them down to about 14 feet in clear water with no snow on the ice.

Has anyone with an aquarium looked at the baits under water and observed if there is a noticeable difference between soft and medium?

Just wonderin' !

Andrew.  I use medium when shooting baits with the paddle tail.  The action is still great, if they are to soft like some they tend not to have the same action and it pretty much turns that bait into a one and done.  By that I mean if the fish hits it, you might as well grad another.

I've done well with walleyes on soft and not had many tearing issues to deal with. I'm hair-triggered when I'm jigging these guys though and seldom see the hook beyond the front of their chops. Just me maybe....

On panfish I have had sunfish hit the tails on many baits, missing the hook entirely, and land them while they are hanging on. Its amazing howq much stretch the tails on some of these smaller baits have and how far they'll pull before breaking. That soft is a resilient plastic.
