Best Do-It Swim Jig Model
« on: 01/10/14 22:31 UTC »
I am looking at buying a lead mold for a swimming jig.  I have eliminated the Poison Tail from the list.  I fish some pretty heavy weeds in the late spring, summer and fall.  Which of the models have you have the best success with in terms of the weedlessness?

Do-it makes a regular swim jig mold. I used it for years. I fish a lake that has some pretty heavy weeds. I know you eliminated it but I ended up going with the Poison Tail. I like the hook better and it seems to swim in and out of the feeds fine.

I agree with El Rat. That's my standard swim jig around weeds. The 30 degree eye helps keep snagging the weeds to a minimum ...and I think better hook sets for a bait that is swimming.

Model SMJ-3-MF is the larger sizes. SF is the smaller sizes.  I use the smaller sizes a lot for smallmouth and rip them over the wing dams.

The Weedless Casting Jig is the best Swim Jig in the Do-It book. (imho)  The Poison Tail is "Mr. Versatility" in that it performs in a variety of techniques and does pretty well as a swim jig, but if you're looking for "the" swim jig, the Weedless Casting Jig is about as good as it gets.

Going a bit ot, but I live the versatility of the poison tail.
Modified it as a spinnerbait, use it as a chatterbait (l3886bp hook), swim jig etc etc.

I love the weedless casting jig and I'll tell you why. I know that you can swim any kind of jig, I subscribed to not having a dedicated swim jig so I used my Snootie jig and the Poison Tail because of the versatility. Then 2 years ago I was on the water with a friend and he had a swim jig that was made as a swim jig, nothing else, I believe it was a Dirty Jigs swim jig and I was watching it and noticed something that made it different, the angle at which it comes through the water, most other jigs the hook is slightly lower but the swim jig it is closer to level than others. After seeing that I got the weedless casting jig mold and I made my northern finesse swim jigs in 1/8oz to 1/4oz for shallow flats and it has been killer, very weedless and swims very true, no listing to the sides, perfectly upright, it is an awesome design. I just got the Trokar pro swim jig and I haven't had a chance to try it but I wanted it to make the California style swim jig with the heavier wire hook and that mold uses a flat eye heavy wire hook, it looks like it will handle larger swim baits which is another thing I wanted. Try the regular weedless castin jig is you want a great swim jig, there are 2 mold models, one like I have for the smaller baits and another that makes larger ones.

Thanks Small.  That is some good info.  I will be pairing it with the 4 inch ST Grub to I think that is the one I want.  I like the Trokar too and will probably pick one of the up for the bladed jigs and bigger profiles.

I have been using the 5/0 hooks most of time; pairing with 3.5" swim shad; I have picked up the 3" & 3.5" twin tail grub molds for this season.
