Warm up on the horizon...
« on: 02/11/14 09:21 UTC »
Virtually every town in the area has put a notice out to their residents to leave a “pencil sized” stream of cold water flowing until further notice because the frost line has exceeded six feet this year… (the normal is four feet).  We’ve been 20 – 30 degrees below normal for the majority of the winter, but next week I can see a return to expected seasonal temperatures which means a thaw is coming.  Right now, the frost is set in so deep, and the ice is so thick, that it will take some time before we will see enough open water to fish from a boat locally, but a return to normal temps will be significant spirit lifter.

The greatest potential problem with this kind of quick warm up is the associated floods that accompany it.  A few years back the Big Miss went from the water being iced over to water over the banks in about two weeks.  This kind of rapid and significant flood really makes it hard to play the big fish bite.

If there is an upside for me, it is the warmer temps which will extend my time in the garage to where I can really get my hands dirty instead of just salivating over the computer... and I’m not talking about porn...  I’ve seen some pretty neat things and novel ideas on here and I’m just itching to get out and run with a few of these.  However, the downside is the way I can lose track of time out there and I end up only making dinner for the fish and not the wife... (it has happened before and will likely happen again)... I best not forget Valentine’s Day  :-* ... just to give me a little more buffer with my errant mind.

On that Big Miss the water temps are a big factor in having a decent large-fish bite each spring. When that water comes up so does the temperature and having only about a four degree swing between not quite ready and over means things can happen fast with the walleye spawn. Like in a couple days. Sauger are less fussy than waldo and will string their spawning out from 46-48 degrees until about it hits around 52 degrees.

We worked the shop yesterday in Red Wing and I took a little tour around town after doing the bank stuff. It was 18 below as I stepped up to the water's edge and made my first flip into the drink. With little flow it took about thirty second to retrieve. I had to clear the guides of ice after every cast, but I hung there for ten minutes. No fish, but plenty of fresh air. lol

It isn't the fast swing in temps that hurts me here; it's the major change in flow (and newly flooded areas) that completely relocates the fish which becomes a potential ice out kill-joy.  I love the spring walleye bite - especially at night - for the big sows, but when the flow puts them in/under the trees, night fishing no longer has the same quality fish option.

It doesn't completely ruin my spring because I am able to bandage these sorrows well enough to start looking for momma wide-lips in certain backwater areas with springs, but I somehow just feel like I'm getting cheated a bit when I don't get much play with Miss Wallace.

The dam by me on the wis river is only running at 5000 feet a sec. And better flow speeds are still to come. Last year the first walleye was caught on January 27 this year it will be alot later. Hope the one's on the mighty miss don't have trouble with ice jams.
