Nugget Spinnerbait

So how many of you remember this mold?  It was the "Nugget" mold similar to the Hilderbrandt Nugget.  Its a twin spin.  Its one of my favorite night baits for Bass.  I use two willow blades but you can use two Indiana's or Colorado's if you want more lift. 

One thing I'd like to mention is the blade color.  I like black nickle blades for night spinnerbaits of any kind.  The problem is finding them.  I discovered a great alternative.  Take any nickle blade and powder paint it in Component Systems "Smoke".  In fact, I don't even bother looking for black nickle blades anymore.  They are always expensive and not readily available in many sizes.  Problem solved... smoke powder paint over a nickle blade.

So does anyone else have this one?  circa 1981... Gotta love the instructions on the mold on how to bend the wire and bend the hook!  I use a standard 4/0 spinnerbait hook.

Wow! That's nifty and a great alternative suggestion for black nickel blades. Would love to get my hands on one of those molds. Never ran across it before. Thanks for sharing!

I usually put my own skirts together but for night baits I buy the Starflash skirts, black/blue flake or black/gold flake.  They really seem to work better.  They are very full and "springy" I guess I would say.  And the little pieces of flake in them are like sparks catching any light available.  Very subtle but effective.   I honestly don't like Starflash for day baits but they are great for the night baits. 

As far as the old molds, if you are diligent on E-Bay they turn up.  I love the old JV-5-A Glider jig and I wanted a second one (just because... don't judge me!) and I started watching e-bay.  I actually found two more within a few months.  They are out there.

This Nugget mold says "Style : Toledo" on it.  Anyone know what that means?

As far as painting blades, the transparent color powder paints over nickel get you some very interesting colors.  They hold up pretty well too.

Could be Toledo Bend Reservoir.  Neat looking mold.  I had forgotten it.  My guess it would be a decent seller.
Jerry V. ?  It would be a cool thing if Do-It would re-release a series of discontinued molds that were once good sellers or unique ( like this one ).   Assuming the masters still existed, it doesn't seem to be a big issue.

Yep, it sure would be cool if we could bring back ALL of the old designs that went away for a while but I don't think they'll bring back a mold unless you can garner a few hundred people to commit to buying it.  That is about what it would take to have the foundry drop what they're doing and pump out something different.  Releasing a new, or in this case old, design isn't quite as simple as one might think.

That is AWESOME!!!! Is it a flat eye hook that you would need and where do you tie the bait to the line?

Haven't used one of those in a long time!!!!!  Always had them in bucktail.   Lot's of the old molds I wish I still had!!!  You really do need to watch Ebay but sometimes the price isn't very nice!!!!

Smalljaw, the line tie comes out of the nose.  It doesn't show up really well in the photo.  The mold calls for an obsolete hook.  I never used it anyway.  I use a standard spinnerbait hook and bend a line tie out of wire to protrude from the nose.  It attaches to the eye of the hook so everything is connected.

Walleye wacker, yes just give me some time to catch up.  I've had a couple 60 hour weeks at work. 

One thing as well, the mold has no collar for the skirt so I manually add one.  I'll strip the skirt off and post another photo to show you what I am talking about.  Its a little putzing around but for a few at a time it's no big deal.

I had the guys at Do-It look into this thing a little bit today and the mold that we are looking at dates back to the early '80s.  Unfortunately the design dates back even further as the pattern for the design is Plaster of Paris.  We couldn't work it into our foundry's production until the pattern was entirely re-done.

An oldie but a goodie as they say...
