Spinnerbait I like
« on: 03/08/14 16:52 UTC »

Made a dozen of these today. Most all in this color. I catch more fish in the spring when I'm fishing a spinnerbait on this spinnerbait then any other. I thought because so many of you have helped me make baits I would give you a little insight of why I like this spinnerbait over others. First I use to always be a War Eagle fan. They make an awesome spinnerbait. So I kind of took my own little spine off of them. The wire I use is .030 piano wire. It gives you a ton of vibration. Will it break ? Yes but you need that extra tump to catch the fish and I think worth it. If you look at the hook it is a 3/0 Hookerz Tackle ( giving a little plug for my buddy Ben ) stinger hook. This stinger hook is longer then most spinnerbait hooks. Plus I set it as far back into the mold as I can eliminating the need for a stinger hook. And last the blade. That's a #5 Colorado Deep Cup. I believe in the spring to catch big fish back in the shallows is to pitch the spinnerbait as far back as you can and slow roll it over logs and or pads. That combo will give you a lot of water movement with a supper slow retrieve yet keep the hook upright so you don't snag. It's a winner for me.

In a few of the lakes I fish they seem to like blue. I had a guy from Indiana give me a few he made with blue so I call this one Old Hoosier. I also make them in a yellow with a white blade for muddy water and all black with gold blade for night. I might have to try a green. War Eagle makes a mouse color that I've always liked. It sort of has a green tint to it.
Thanks Justin. I have plenty for now. Many of my surf comes from an old fly tiring kit that was my grandpas. After my dad past away I got it so it has lots of karma. Some times I wonder if the fish stand a chance. LOL

That's a nice looking spinner Lamar. I don't know why, but I like simple spinners...like what you show here. Some of those with two blades make it feel like I am tossing out a Christmas wreath.
I enjoy looking at those pieces of art that others here create, but to use I like the simple things.

Love the colors in that skirt Lamar.

I agree Tom. I always keep it simple. I believe that getting the bait where it belongs in a matter that the fish will eat it means way more then the bait itself. At least when it comes to bass fishing. So I always try to make the bait to fish the condition.

I'm a fan of Simple in Spinnerbaits, also.  Every SB I turn-wire on gets a Single.  I've got some Old School Classic Twists I'm applying this year.

That is 3/8 oz. That size blade can handle it on a slow retrieve. I use pearl powder paint instead of white. I think white is to hard to use for some reason it just doesn't lay down right. So if your having problems with white, try pearl you'll like it better.
