Under a float
« on: 05/06/14 12:38 UTC »
I fished this morning and di well on crappies. My approach was super simple: find wood suspended in deeper water and toss a jig/plastic hanging under a float past it and work the jig back right next to the wood. Worked great and I had to clean 10 fish because of the technique's productiveness.

The wind was howling on the lake and boat control was a joke. I managed to last three hours and caught maybe 35 crappies in that time. The bigger hen fish were hanging pretty deep and I had to set the float at about 5 feet to get any of the big girls to hit but the males of about 11-12 inches sure liked a the jig dancing around at about 3 feet so that's where I did most of my fishing.

The fish have finally begun to show some interest in hitting with the water at around 54 degrees now. They haven't moved into the pre-spawn water yet but will by the end of this week I'm sure. Its nice getting on the water at 7 and having the first cast get smacked.  Wind or not, I had a fun time today.

I did the same thing yesterday, the wind had picked up so I anchored in 5' of water with my micro power pole and I had the end of the tree top in 10' of water marked with a buoy. I would cast out and let the jig and float drift over the tree top. Every time it past over it I got a bite, I ended up with 33 and had 3 that went 2 1/2lbs and one that if I had pulled on her tail just a little would have been 3lbs. I also had a great day and most of these fish had spawned and water temps here are 70°.

I gave the lake a shot again this morning but we had some fun weather here yesterday late in the afternoon/evening and it played heck with the water. I should have know things were going to be off when I got hit by a 12 inch crappie on my first cast.

I got to run thru a whole gamut of different baits and colors but noting wanted what I offered. I did bump into a pod of small sunfish that liked to hang on tails but I got tired of them real fast and moved on.

Got Thursday on the calendar again so maybe the weather will straighten out by then.

Well....its Thursday and if anything the weather has really done a number on the lake. In 5 hours of casting I got one bass. It was a dandy by anyone's measure, but t its still a bass. No crappies, no sunnies, no waldo.

The water had come up and a no-wake was in place on the lake so getting around was a royal pain. The water took on a bunch more color and then the temp of the water was down 5 degrees from Monday's readings in most all places we fished.
