what am I doing wrong
« on: 06/26/14 10:02 UTC »
Ok for the life of me I cannot figure out what is going on here. I used to be able to shoot these no problems but the last couple days I'm stumped.

I'm shooting the tops first with the lam plate..I tried shooting colder 325 and hotter 340 and I get the same result in all 3 molds, and only getting 1/2 good baits. It's weird I used to be able to get all of them to turn out. I switched injectors even and still seem to be getting this...It's driving me nuts

Are you shotting ssecond color too fast and the baits are lifting?

Monte probably has your answer...shoot slowly.

Also, put a little worm oil on the laminate plate. That will help keep the plate from lifting the edges of the bait when you remove it (the baits can stick to the laminate plate). I also give each bait a little push to make sure it is firmly seated.

Sorry but NEVER use worm oil on the lam plate as the second color will not adhere right. Try not to get oil from your fingers on it either.

Ya not sure - initially thought I might be which is why I switched to the small injector - for more feel but with the small fry it's hardly any push and she's full lol

Pretty sure Bill hit the nail on the head..  You are shooting your hot plastic too fast. And I agree with Bill, NEVER use oil on your laminate plate.. just take your time to remove the plate and you wont lift the baits out..

I re-seat the first color in the mold with a little pressure using a very clean and de-greased finger ( alcohol ).  Pearls are more susceptible to lift as they are a thicker plastic.

Don't remove them from the mold, leave the runner on (but remove the sprue) and try to shoot them.  I do this with hand poured laminates and it has eliminated the problem of lifting bellies.

I don't understand what you mean by remove the runner but leave the sprue? Isn't this the same?

When I shoot mine with the laminate plate, it only shoots half the runner. I pull the "cap" off the top of the runner, close the mold and shoot the second half slowly. This way you are not disturbing the heads in the mold and there is a less chance of them moving when injecting the second color.

This is why I love my 2.5 ounce injectors! I have two and that's the reason I don't use big injectors on crappie baits is because is hard to shoot the plastic slooow enough. I slide my lam plate off so not to lift the bait the inject sloow the second bait temp is better to be a little cooler because it's not a thin. Melted plastic will bond no matter what just hold a little positive pressure at the end
