1/32 wacky heads
« on: 06/28/14 13:03 UTC »
A while back I posted on a 1/32 pro mold modification to make 1/32 wacky heads using do-it's very own wacky hook. The picture here shows one with a few baits that team up nicely with it.

I'm thinking the picture has been here before. The blue heads and rigged green on the bottom are the wacky style and the rigged green at the top is a conventional sickle hook. Anyway, I spoke with a buddy last night who jus got home from a two-weeker in northern Minnesota where he and his son fished a number of lakes and used these jigs almost exclusively. He reports having his best catch rates using the wacky hook heads. He's not big on floats so everything was done casting and retrieving. His observations were that the standard heads di ok on the cast/retrieve but that his hook-up /hit ratio was much higher using the wacky style.

He focused on panfish and said that even sunfish had not trouble hooking up. Walleyes were hanging tight to weeds beds where he did most of his fishing and they too gave him some action while crappie fishing.

I have used these heads on several spring trips this year and had super good luck fishing them. On the retrieve they allow a bait to swim without the rocking motion conventional heads give when the jig is popped.

It is rewarding.

Somebody gave me the idea only he used a minnow head in 1/32 and 1/16. I got some samples, painted them up and put them to the test. I loved them but didn't want to convert a minnow head mold so I used an older 7 cavity pro mold that tossed collar-less 1/32 heads for the conversion.

Making ones own tackle allows for having tackle that isn't found on the display hooks in package stores. The difference between a conventional jig head and hook and this modded head and hook when casting and retrieving is out of sight. The conventional head and hook have a definite place but when it comes to retrieving without a float or not fishing vertically I have one of these tied on.
