Screw-Loc Jigs
« on: 08/03/14 19:53 UTC »
Just wondering how many use the screw-loc jigs and do you think they'd be better if Do-it replaced the screw-loc with a wire keeper? The wire keeper would have to be stronger and heavier wire than what they have on the market now; but no more screwing your bait on; just insert over the wire keeper! What do you guys think?

I don't mind my screw locks. I use the small ones. Hitch hiker ones.

I use the screw-loc primarily for the shake-it mold and don't have a problem with it all.  At least the bass don't seem to mind.  My formally pudgy fingers have problems handling those wire keepers.
Until next time.

I like the screw locs - they hold better for me.

I could see it if you were using some thing like a skinny carrot. Then the screw-loc is to big.

I don't know about that, Lamar.  I use a screw-lok on a 6" skinny carrot a lot without any problems.  It might be a different story with smaller baits.
Until next time.

Gary:  I have made my own version of this in the past... it's very easy and I'm sure you can do it as well.

Just cut a piece of workable wire a little more than twice as long as you want your keeper to go into the bait; fold it in half with one side being longer than the other and put it through the eye of your hook (or on the bend if using as a trailer); then cross the wires and twist like a bread tie (you may want to use pliers to get it nice and tight); eyeball your keeper length, trim if desired (leaving the ends staggered), and kink the end of each wire with needle nose... (the finished product should have the kinks 180 degrees from each other and penetrating the plastic at different depths).

There are a few times I still use this model because of it's durability... (mainly musky fishing)... but most of the time I use the screw-lok out of function and convenience.

For shaky heads I like the screw lock, it holds better than the straight barbs, the only modification I would like  to see is for the screw lock to be made a little tighter so the overall diameter would be smaller but they are fine as is.  Now, on jigs that have the screw lock around the hook shank in what would be the collar area, yeah, by all means use the wire keeper.
