Favorite Crappie Bait Color?
« on: 08/05/14 14:39 UTC »
Fishing lakes in the central and southern states I found that my Favorite color is Lime/Chartreuse. It's a go to color no matter if it's clear or muddy water. What's your favorite bait color?

Here is a link to the crappie I caught on a (Lime/Chart) 4" Split Tail cut down to 3" - http://custombaits.com/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=2216

It's hard to beat chartruse, but I also do great on Pearl  White.

The waters I fish are clear. (Natural lakes) However a lot of the fishing in my area is done deep (15 to 25 feet)

Varying degrees of stained water for me on the river.

Late spring in back waters or early summer on shallow wing dams can be a riot with a light rod and tiny jigs, but I haven't gone specifically after crappies (other than ice fishing) for a couple of years.  I shot some thumper fry last fall, planning on testing them out this spring/summer, however our four month flood put the kibosh on the most consistent fishing I had up my sleeve.

Now, with the addition of the Mayday Mayfly, I'll have two things to throw at them this fall (or maybe sooner).  As much as I love the "big" fish, it's kinda funny that I can see myself getting back into open-water panfishing with these two baits leading the way.

@efishnc If the state or lake you fish on allows you to fish with two rods, you should try long lining. You don't need a rod holder to start off but make sure when laying your rods down on the out side of the boat it won't get pulled out. Put two 1/32oz or if crappie are deeper two 1/16oz jigs paired with a curly tail bait and troll. Those crappie might be in the open just swimming around following bait fish or bugs. 4lb or 6lb line is what you need. Give one good cast behind your boat and go. Start at a low speed and pick up speed until you get a crappie.

I know a couple of people that troll for them, but I've always anchored and casted to the trees, weed lines or wing-dams... I love to feel the "pop" when they hit it.

Great tip on cutting down the split tail.  3" seems to be the perfect size for those big slabs y'all have down south Jarad.

I'm becoming a fan of black or black/chart more and more everyday for crappies.  All black in clean water and black/chart in stained.

Watermelon green with purple highlights in the Mayday Mayfly has been my go to the last few weeks.   That color has by far out produced any black or brown combinations I've been throwing at them in clean water.

@Kyle You truly are becoming a Crappie Fanatic if Black/Chart is becoming your Fav ;D. I know in the last two years some well known Crappie Companies started to come out with all black baits more.

I would think that would be great in stain/muddy water but clear, wow.

@Everyone Has anyone ever used Brown/Chart?

A bass fanatic masquerading as a crappie fisherman?...

(But "moron" would only apply if the jig was larger than 3/8oz or the worm longer than 7 inches.)
