Lead decoy weight mold
« on: 08/31/14 14:32 UTC »
In my search for a 12 ounce or 16 ounce mushroom weight mold, I ran across this forum and thought it may be a good place to ask.

I currently have the 8 ounce do-it mushroom weight mold but that is a large as they make them so I'm trying to find someone that can make me a 12 and 16 ounce mold. Any suggestions would be appreciated and I do have a weight of each size that they can get the dimensions from.

I can't help you in your quest for heavier decoy weights, but I can welcome you aboard the Do-It forums. I like the user name. Pretty ducks.

Keep us posted on what you find and again, welcome aboard!

I sent you a PM with links to the sites of 2 custom mold makers who can make what you are looking for.
They both make duck decoy anchor molds and both do excellent work.
I have ordered from both of them and would not hesitate to order from either one of them again.
I hope the info helps you get what you are looking for.

You can also use a small stainless bowl and some heavy wire (stainless preferred, but even coat hangers will work) to make your own as I have in the past.  My homemade mushroom anchors fit over the decoy's head and dig in better than any others I've used.  The cantilever effect of the wire causes the anchor to tip and dig - which most other do not - and this alone may eliminate your need for going bigger.

To make:
Bend a ten inch length of wire into a "U" and kink the ends (approx. 1/2 inch) toward each other.  Get something to hold the wire upright in the bowl and pour in your lead... (I typically held my wire upright with my hand, just make sure you have it protected)... once you get the size you want, you can mark your bowl with a sharpie (for consistency) and punch out a bunch of the size you want in a relatively short time.
