Why 3 color baits?
« on: 09/14/11 09:18 UTC »
I recently had someone ask me why I make 3 colored baits, especially flukes. I guess I assumed that since I have read so many articles on soft and hard baits, others had as well.

Anyway, the main reason I do 3 color baits is that they mimic bait fish in the wild. Take a close look at any bait fish and you will notice a generally lighter bottom color, a change in the center color (lateral line, stripe, whatever) and then a contrast in the top color. Look striaght down from the top and the colors all are blended to one. I go for this effect with my 3 colored baits.

Also, read up what most pros say. They realize that 3 colored baits are more realistic. Many even prefer 3 colored worms like Roboworms colors.

Look over the hard baits. Even the simple hard baits generally have a top color, body color and then another color either on the belly or throat area....

While I am not 100% convinced that the colors have to match the baitfish exactly, I am convinced that 3 different, contrasting colors make a difference when the fish are keying on baitfish as a meal.

Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!! LOL!!!

It's all about trying to match what nature has given us.  Like you said, most things that live in the lake or near the lake have atleast 2 colors and some have several different layers of colors.

Plus, throwing a bait that looks like something swimming in the lake gives the angler a lot more confidence!

Now, how do I get 4 colors in my baits!  ;D

I am 100% convinced contrast makes a huge difference on the water - 100% no question.

We try and set our cavities vertically so making laminates is easy (Croaker, Toad, Wutz-It, Craws, Creatures, etc...).  You have a couple options for making laminates this way.  You can hand pour the top and bottom and inject the middle, or you can hand pour the top and bottom and use a blending block to add 2 additional colors in the middle.  It's really limitless what you can do color wise with a little practice.

It can be done and done quite easily. Not sure that it would be something for production though.

I am still trying to think of a 4 color bait to make!!!

Can you use the 7" Wutz-It and pour some Baby Bass (Pearl belly, black lateral line, Watermelon Body, Dark Watermelon back).  I will need to inspect them - photos won't do.  Ideally they would be available for inspection before the McDonalds tournament.

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'm okay.  I made some that are 3 color and they turned out nice.  I think I will try some with more just to see if I can do it.  If they turn out good I'll post some pics.    ???

Ghostbait,

I am surprised you sold me your only 7" Wutz-It.  The pictures of the Wutz-It you posted look awesome.  I thought you more than one.

The 7" did very well for me on the Federal Long Beach Break Wall.

By the way, I know what it feels like when you sell a mold and then regret selling it.

Bo..

LOL Bo! No regrets here. At some point I had to focus on what I had already going on.

I make thousands of the 5" a month so I have my hands full with just that size.  :-\

I am working something right now that would really help out with this. Give me awhile and I will do it. Frank
