I love that number when it describes a crappie's length, as in a caught crappie. This morning a buddy and I slipped into a great crappie bite ahead of a major, fast-moving cold front and were able to stick a few crappies in the 13 inch range. All caught on jigs/plastics.

That cold front was ushered in with some heavy duty winds at about 10:30 AM. A wind shift and dropping thermometer chased us off the docks where we were at. One minute we had broken sunshine, the next were had heavy cloud cover and thick mist and a wind blowing 90 degrees from where it had been coming from. As the shift contued to inch towards the NW the temps kept heading down and the mist turned to light rain. It took all of 10 minutes to shut the fishing right down.

The bucket had 6 crappies and a sunfish in it for dinner, with all of the crappies above 12 inches.

It's hard for me to understand how those northern Mississippi river crappie get so big. Must not be many guys fishing for them. Here in northern Indiana a catch of ten to eleven inches is super.

I don't understand it either....but there are monster crappie in the Mississippi river up here. Probably because there is a lot of food for them!

It's not unusual to catch a big crappie on a bass tube or even a bass spinnerbait! I even got one on a 3/8 oz Snootie Jig two springs ago fishing for smallmouth.

REALLY BIG bluegills too!

Both the crappies and bluegills are bigger than anywhere else I have caught them in Wi or MN.  The Minnesota State Record Black Crappie is 5 lbs!

When I filleted the largest crappie we got today I found maybe 300 freshly eaten pin minnows in the gut. Where we found these hounds this morning the water is absolutely rife with huge shoals of the tiny minnows. The 13s are fun fish so imagine what its like sticking the hook into one of the guys that pull 15" or more of tape. These brutes snap 6 and 8 pound line like they practice it. And actually that 5 pound record black was caught no more than 18 miles from where we were standing today, that fish was over 19". I carry a tape in my pail all the time and when the hefties show up I take time to measure. Today the largest fish were hooked the deepest and would not have lived if released. If they are going to die, I consider them table fare and that includes the small fish.

People have asked why I don't take pictures. Firstly, I have nothing to prove in a picture. Secondly, and probably more important to me, Minnesota and Wisconsin are both, sadly, full of people who would care nothing of raping a resource of big crappies. Minnesota's Upper Red Lake is testament to this. In three short years a prime crappie fishery went from a place where 15 to 17 and 18 inch crappies were as common as dust went to a fishery where an 11 incher today is huge. The Mississippi River in the last thirty years has undergone a transformation from a polluted mess to a wonderful  and resourceful body of water. Many of the waters found in Wisconsin that feed the big river have also been cleaned up. As a result, walleyes, sauger, pike, muskies, the basses and the whole of the panfish clan have blossomed and upper size ranges that were almost rare 30 years ago are small by todays standards. Can you imagine a 20" perch? Move over Dakotas because this big river has them now and the numbers are growing in spite of areas where over-harvest threatens.

Until I took a very serious interest in crappies maybe 40 years ago keeping a limit each time out wasn't a problem for me at all. Then things began to get cleaned up a little at a time and the crappie's average size began to increase. Where it took the 15 fish limit to make a decent fry for 4 people, only 10 fish were soon needed to do the same fry. When these big suckers hit the sink I don't keep more than 5 for Carole and I and even at that its two meals. I don't freeze crappies or sunfish. Imagine filleting the 25 that can be legally kept on the Mississippi River. There are those who would do so every day as long as the bite held together. Our more local lake sees that kind of fishing all winter long and today the crappie numbers, especially the large fish numbers, is dwindling. Every once in a great while a 13 will hit the net out there now where 14s were as common as they are on the river. The lake is going downhill fast mostly due to people without scruples who if they aren't fishing have nothing more to do than to sit on the internet to find out where the best big fish bites are happening so it can exploited. I have no desire to fuel that fire and that's all pictures do in my opinion. There's a reason the pools of 4 and 5 of the big river have fish of this caliber. Much of it is food availability. A lot has to do with extensive backwater areas where these fish spawn un-bothered and those young fish can sanctuary. Genetics is a huge factor. But not telling where and not showing pictures of how big also help to keep over-harvest of the true heavy-weights in check.

Gary, some year you should plan a couple day's get-away and fish the fall with me. One can almost bank on Halloween as the start of prime time that can last thru November. maybe have to dress a little warmer but the rewards are super. This is my all-time favorite time of year and the big crappies are one of the reasons why.

Yeah Tom that weather is headed this way!!  Saturday they're calling for measurable snow!!!  It's already been snowing up on the mountain tops but now we're gonna get it.  That will shut the fish off in the pond I fish quick.

Ha! Ma finally got after me to turn the furnace on. I finally put on a long sleeved t-shirt to work in the garage. There was snow yesterday in the northern portion of the state here...a seven hour drive from our house.

Someone commented on the beautiful "Indian Summer" weather we were having a week ago when Ma and I were out on our walk and I had just a t-shirt on and a pair of shorts. I told them that I hoped it stayed like that for about another 28 weeks or so but they had to spoil it by asking, "what about winter?". I said. "who wants winter?". "Oh, but we like to ski and see the winter scenery". I told them to move further north, perhaps 300 miles. I like the Indian Summer idea being here for a long, long time.

The older I get, the more I like the color of dirt in the winter. That equates to no shoveling.

Tom, Agree with you 100%. On the lake I live on I see guys who fish everyday and keep all of there fish. When you ask them what they do with them they say "give them away!" I'm like you, I keep six or eight bluegill to eat that night . The rest get thrown back. I've got a little ultra-lite and like to throw the ultra-lite plugs and jigs with it. It's fun to catch a nice crappie or bass, hold it up so everyone can see it and the drop it over the side of the boat. It's fun just seeing the expression on people's faces! >:(

I'm a pretty serious Catch and Release guy...and like You, MuskyG, I enjoy the looks on their faces when they discover my ways.  I find that MOST people are proud to claim they throw nothing back.  I understand, enjoy, and support, harvest...but I also understand, enjoy, and support, conservation.  FEW that are fishing are hungry...but many act like they are.  If I kept fish like many claim to, I can hurt a small body of water BY MYSELF...but I like to go and catch, often, so I like watching them swim away...and that angry, lip-freeing head-shake once they're back in the water makes me smile EVERY time.

That's another reason I like making baits. It's fun to discover new ways to catch fish, new lures, new colors, new techniques. I found a place that was selling UV nail polish, but they wanted $27 for three bottles! I'll have to keep a lookout for it when I'm in the stores.

With some UV Powder, one can mix his (or herm) own UV Nail Polish...unless it would have an unplanned reaction...

I use the UV Blast spray. It goes on in just the right amount of coverage. Dries in a blink so the bait is ready to fish in like 15 seconds. It doesn't appear to wear off real easy. I use it on my Great Lakes tackle...everything from trolling spoons to spinners and casting stuff. Last fall I sprayed some looper bugs with it and added a waxie to bug and hung it under a float while casting the other rod. Worked like a magnet on the steelhead and loopers.
