Casting Spoon lure
« on: 11/16/14 20:21 UTC »
Here's one of Do-Its marvels. Sold as a casting spoon, this little gem doubles as a vertical jigging spoon. These spoon lures are super productive on the Mississippi River behind the dams and along current breaks where deeper water and shallow collide. These breaks are prime territory for walleye and sauger. The vertical approach is just the ticket to banging these guys.

Shown are a 1/4, 1/2 and a 3/4 ounce lures. Similar baits sold along the river have another treble at the top split ring as well as at the bottom where these have hooks, but I find too much tangling occurring with the hooks at the top so I have not used them here. The large eyes are usually found at the bottom of most of these spoons and the common name is a "one eye". I have gold scale tape on the backs of the purple and the orange baits shown here. The chartreuse has glow tape on the other side.

While the shapes available are many, I like the "weight low" profile when using this particular bait. They fish fairly fast with a nice wobble if dropped on a loose line. A minnow head or a whole minnow can be added for taste but I prefer the dressed treble or a tail portion of a twister tail added for additional action. The hits will not be subtle regardless of what you add to the trebles. This bait can be rigged and fished with the narrow end down if a person wants more wobble on the drop. Basically, there is no wrong way to fish these as long as the delivery is vertical. They do work well thru the ice too.

We received a winter wake-up call here in the north but hopefully I'll be able to sit a day or two yet in the boat and jig these. The smaller one shown will grab crappies too. The larger sizes will bring in Lake Trout if used in water where those denizen reside. This is simply a great all-round bait.

Do you "top coat" the paint or tape with anything?

I don't. I could and probably should given the eyes. An epoxy coat similar to what the hard bait painters use would do the trick Gary.s

Ctom, I have used these spoons for a long time, with great success for sauger and walleyes, strippers love them too. But I have much better luck with the hook on the small end. I, like you, have tried both ways. Haven't had much trouble with tangling.

I also fish them wide side down.  Hook size either #6 or #4 unless large stripers or large cats are around then a #2.  I use 2D prism eyes and a dipped top coat.

I put a hook on both ends and tie my line to the "big" end.  A piece of fluorescent rubber tubing on the treble shaft and a small blade finishes off the small end. This animal is all offense - one of my favorite lures for everything!!!
Take somebody fishing soon!

This would be another good jig for a holographic foil coating.
Somebody needs to try it on one of these.

So I want make two tone castings spoons. You know where it's not just one solid color! Is this pretty much impossible to do with powder paint? Do I need to take up airbrushing or something in order to do that?

Paint the lighter color on the whole lure then use a spray can of lacquer to shade the parts you want, protecting the remainder with tape or a piece of cardboard while you spray.

Very easy to do with powder paint. I do it all the time.
Go to TJ's tackle and buy a powder paint spray gun. I have three of them and they work great. http://tjstackle.com/
He even throws in a couple of extra jars. I keep a jar handy for each color and switch them out as needed.
Here are some slab jigs I added an extra color too with the powder paint spray gun. These are 100% powder paint.

On these slabs I dipped the white with red heads but sprayed the others. You can see I did some in different ways some have dots and some just a stripe of another color.

I also paint mine with tj's powder paint gun. I have 3, and change up on the fly. But You can paint some pretty cool looking baits with just a paint can, and some homemade stencils, or just taping off one area, and changing colors on the rest of the bait. They are one of the easiest baits to customize there is. They are also great fishing lures, you can catch a lot of different fish with these baits.
