            THE YIN

Yes, finally.  Our rain year is measured from July 1st - June 30.  We only had .7 inches at Thanksgiving and the normal year is about 3 inches.  Many of our lakes are almost dry...many lakes are not accessible because the ramps are high and dry, rivers have turned into creeks,  and lakes you can get on are dangerous because of unmarked hazards.  The rain we're getting now is a blessing and we will take whatever we can get.  They are calling for as much as 5" of rain and several feet of snow over the next week or so and more storms are forecast for 10 days out.  Prayers are being answered.  Amen.

            THE YANG

California was a tinder box this summer and fall and we had several huge fires.  The King Fire was about 100,000 acres and burned for weeks.  That fire was about 30 miles from my home.  It wiped out the watershed for many miles and destroyed all vegetation in many deep canyons.  This will result in land and mud slides.  Some residents are voluntarily evacuating their homes and this is only our first storm.

So, welcome to California.  It should be an interesting weather year.

Until next time.

I was in Oakland back in 1989 right after the earthquake for a couple weeks. Before we came home we took a mini-vacation and drove up to Portland. Beautiful country in those mountains. We stopped by Lake Shasta and the boat ramps were 200 yards out of the water, still made me want to wet a hook.

Only time I've ever really been out there other than swapping planes in LA. Maybe after retiring I'll get a chance to travel a little.

I spent many years in the "deserts". Ft Irwin is one in particular.  California is a beautiful and dangerous place. I remember one huge earth quake in the mid 90s that had our house shaking and the windows rumbling.  While everyone was fighting and falling over each other trying to get to the bathroom, I was standing on my bed trying to surf while the bed was moving to the other side of the room.  Later that morning my wife fell in the shower during an aftershock. Somehow in the end it was all my fault. Lol
Hope you guys get the rain you need.

I saw the evening news had a clip on Cali's weather and didn't hear if it was in the north or below you. I guess the rain is welcomed unless you do get the mud slides. Snow wouldn't be that much better come spring. I know the fires got close to you so hopefully the rain/snow will help to dampen things up around you.

Take care bud, don't need to hear of you being swept away in a mud slide.

No doubt. Hope the slides/mud slides don't become an issue for you. That would be some scarey shmidt right there.

I've been alive for a lot of years and I can honestly say I have never seen it rain as hard as it has been for the last three hours.  We live in a fairly rural area and we're surrounded by several small creeks and a couple mountain rivers.  There is going to be some flooding for those lower than us.  Highway 80 in Sacramento has a couple feet of standing water over it.  There is a silver lining to all this water.  Most of it is going to flow into Folsom Lake.  The lake was at 383' yesterday and I'm curious what it will be tomorrow evening.  (Full pool is 466'.)
Until next time.

Thanks for your concerns, guys, but I think I'm going to pull a Carl and try to surf the North Fork into Folsom.
Until next time.

Seems like every area you live has something that can swallow you up or flatten you out. It's part of living on planet earth. Good luck over there. Just remember if you hear a train coming and there is no tracks, it's not a train. I often wondered if I lived in that area if I couldn't rig one of those things on my chair like the batmobile had. You know where you push the button and it ejects you a hundred yards in the sky. You could have a parachute and buy the time you came back down the mud slide would be over. Seems like a simple fix to me.

Well, it's about 0630 and still dark.  The storm was still going strong into the early morning, but has now passed.  We got 5.21 inches of rain since late afternoon yesterday and they are calling for some sun later this afternoon.  Folsom has come up almost 3' and wii continue coming up for the next several days.

So ends another feast or famine event, California style.  I've got to go now.  The sun will be coming out and I've got to get down to the beach to work on my tan.
Until next time.
