Looking for extra long bucktails
« on: 12/08/14 13:37 UTC »
I doubt I'll find any now that manufacturers are back to making hair jigs again but I figured I'd ask. I'm looking for ones that have 7" and longer hair , I had a source but they went out of business but I remember paying like $18 for 1 tail, I was making really long bucktail jigs for some striper guys, so if anyone knows where I can get some I'd appreciate it.

Try Blue Ribbon Fly shop in West Yellowstone Montana. The BEST source of hairs and furs! Plus, you can call them and tell them exactly what you are looking for and they will pick through their stuff and find it.

"Like deer tails? I got some deer tails you can have"....MO

Best make sure he will take the rest of the car-kill with the tail.

Reasonably priced bucktails that have any decent size have become a joke. I tie a few for myself but outside of that have quit pretty much.

I will check next time I buy a box of them.  I get them for 2.50 each but don't think they have hair that long.

I've never seen a deer tail with hair 7 inches, at least not from any whitetails I've shot.  3-5" seems about average for what is running in the woods around me, but I can't speak for deer raised on farms... or maybe it was some other exotic breed?

You can always supply your striper guy with custom made plastic trailers.  ;)

Most of the time when I hunt I see ALOT of white tails in the air and they look to be about 36 inches as they run away   :o

Thanks for the replies everyone. The buck or deer tails with long hair are indeed farm raised, but now a fad is happening and it isn't available anymore, at least to me. Remember how the price of hackle went through the roof when women started using grizzly hackle for hair extensions? Then when the "A" rig became the thing to have my wire supplier was running out of .035 and .040 wire and then the cost went up and now the preacher jigs are back in style and the extra long deer tails have disappeared. The place I got them from either went out of business or they are now selling to the likes of Mann's or Talon custom lure or some other larger manufacturer and most places that had it have taken it off their inventory. There isn't a ton of it around, if you look around these big hair jigs cost anywhere from $10 to $16 each but that is because the tails with the really long hair were expensive, as I said before, I use to pay $18 per tail and I was happy as I saw some that were as much as $30 but I'm already figuring that if I find any it will be too costly so I'll probably go synthetic or just not make any at all. Thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate it and if anyone has regular buck tails that are processed and they would like to sell them just let me know.

I appreciate it MO but now I'm up to my eye balls in bucktails!!!!! Last night my old neighbor, who is a taxidermist, knocks on the door with a bucket full of tails for me. Buck season started here 2 weeks ago and these were the first ones he had done, he wants to give me some more but I will never be able to store them all...LOL.
