UV resin
« on: 01/23/15 16:05 UTC »
I've been researching using UV resin for finishing flies and need some advice. Hoping some of you have some experience with this and can suggest what brands are best. I've checked out Loon products and I know the work great. Also Clear Cure Goo. Just wondering if I could do better on price on Amazon for the resin and the UV light. The ones I've looked at there are much cheaper than say BassPro or Cabelas fly shops. Any suggestions on where to shop would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm a little late seeing this, but ive been using the clear cure goo and I love it.  I bought the kit with the thick and the thin and the light.  I also got a bottle of the hydro with the needle tip on it.  The thick and the thin are a tad bit tacky after they cure so you can cover it with the hydro or head cement to get a smooth non tacky finish.  The light really is the most expensive part to buy once you have that the epoxy itself isn't all that expensive!  I use it to make a lot of ice flies that would be a real pain to make with regular epoxy.  I found better deals on ebay than normal retail stores.  Good luck!

I couldn't answer this when it was posted, but I ordered a bottle of Loon UV clear fly finish in the thick variety a couple of weeks ago and used it for the first time over the weekend. I really, REALLY like the stuff. I haven't gotten a uv light yet, it's supposed to show up in the mail any day, so I just used the sunlight to cure it. It worked out pretty well in my opinion. I've heard that the thick cures tacky, but I haven't experienced this yet. It might be because I set my flies out in the sun for a full day to make sure they were good and cured as the sunlight was being filtered through the window. I also found better deals on ebay than anywhere else. I ended up buying a cheap ($5) uv flashlight instead of the $30 loon one, theoretically it should work the same.

Thanks for the replys guys. I just received a 2 oz bottle of Solarez resin but haven't used it yet. I got the fly tie version of it and have heard good reviews on it. I plan on gettin a. Uv flashlight from Home Depot this week. It's the right frequency and wavelength or however they measure it. This stuff I got needs a light that's between 385 and 400 on that frequency. You need to be careful of that or it may not cure right. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I finally got to try the Solarez resin and I have to say I'm really impressed by the results. Sets up in only seconds with a UV flashlight. Drys clear and hard. Very easy to use.
