Got any ideas for a quick fix?
« on: 02/01/15 17:17 UTC »
earlier today I was cleaning my injector and messed up. I tightened the screw too much and broke the head off. Anyone have an idea for a fix so I don't have to buy a new injector? I've thought of the self tapping screws but not sure if it'll work. It's a bears medium injector by the way

Easy-out to remove the screw, or if the screw-shank lets the parts be reassembled, put it back together and drill another hole at another spot and put a screw in the new hole.  If You have a Tap, drill/tap new threads on a new hole.

Easy does it.

The only way I can think of fixing it would be to drill out the broken screw...and then buy a new stainless screw that would fit the new hole at the hardware store.

If you can't fix it...let me know. I've got one I'll send you.

See if you can find. Left handed drill bit. It may back it out.  Or really a right may go ahead and bite in and drive it out.

I would drill and tap a new hole next to it. Self tapping won't work unless you pre drill the hole. All it does is holds the lid on. Should be easy to fix.

Yes, or on the opposite side of it... and this is not holding the space shuttle together, so there is no real need for a heavy torque.

Now that the head is gone, you should be able to use a regular, smaller drill bit and drill it causing it to push through... Then just use a new screw the same threads and length... Lube with this.

Awesome, thanks guys. I will probably just try drilling on the other side and tapping it that way. The reason I put heavy pressure on it was because the lid wouldn't stay in place and let air get in when I was sucking up plastic. Usually I just do the unsafe way and pour it into the injector but couldn't with the new presto. I'll let everyone know what works for me

It is suposed to let air in BEHIND the piston. Otherwise you would not be able to pull the plunger back

Yep... You really should consider my post. Tightening the screw tighter will not have any better effect.

enough air would get in where the rod goes thru anyways so having that cap on tight wouldn't make a difference whether the plunger could be pulled back. Having it tight kept that cap from being pulled up while filling the injector, which made the pull smoother.

Sometimes you can use a small prick punch and a hammer and slowly back the screw out. Painstaking but sometimes the only way especially with small screws,

From the picture though, I would fill the screw hole with JB weld, flush and rotate the collar 180 degrees and drill and tap a new hole and move on.  For any of these, I would alwasy use an anti-seize compound on the threads, Yes, it is messy but in the long run well worth a couple smudges on your pinkies.
Wishing y'all tight lines and bent wriggling rods. Happy Fishing!
