Casey Ashley wins it on a home made bait!
« on: 02/22/15 19:51 UTC »
Casey Ashley wins the biggest show in bass fishing and admits he caught em on his dad's home made bait!! Goes to show you no matter how many box store baits are out there the edge still goes to a guy that can tweak the little things or come out with something the fish haven't seen. Ashley seems like a super guy congrats goes out to him. I wish Randy could of repeated but hell of a show from him!! Very good classic. I bet a crank bait that DO-IT has something to do with this special bait!

What we understand is that it was a ponyhead or seahorse spinner jig poured with a 4/0 hook and powder painted with pearl white combined with a Zoom Fluke Jr.

At his press conference he said that his dad gave them to him about a month ago and told him that we would probably with the Classic with them.

When asked if there would be a signature series bait, he said probably, but he and his dad were not going to pour them.  Also said a lot of folk for where he is from like to make there own tackle.

Pretty cool with win the world championship on some homemade tackle!

Was really hoping Mike Iaconelli would win it but that's still incredible!

All the other competitors were getting 5 bites a day and some not even that where as Casey was catching 9 to a dozen a day. He really had them dialed in. I've fished those lakes down there before and they can be extremely tough. I've pretty much said I'm not going back to lakes with Blue Herring in them. Those fish move around so much. They run in wolf packs and surround the herring and then all charge together. They will not eat before or after the charge only those few seconds. So you get that early morning bite then it's a grind after that. It makes for long days.

I think you are a shoe in! When you make it to the classic please please please wear your mechanic covers alls with ole school patches. But you have to wear it half unzipped, rubber boots and a Manns bait co trucker hat.  :P
I can see it now.... Justin how did you catch that GGGGaint ! Well I'll tell ya I saw a hot piece of tail sunbathing on the dock so I snuck up to see a peak and I was dragging my hula popper behind the boat and bam darn near jerked my favorite pistol grog rod out the boat. The I yank real good on that pig jus to impress that hot piece of tail on the dock and that big ole bass just flopped in the boat.

At the press conference he said it was a Do-it pony head with a 4/0 Mustad Hook and a Sampo swivel with a super fluke Jr. attached to it. He said the key was the sampo swivel with the size 3.5 willow leaf blade, no matter how slow he moved the bait, the blade would still spin. Based on that I'm guessing they modified the mold or instead of a swivel they just added a loop to attach a ball bearing swivel. I say that because the go pro footage shows the bait and the blade doesn't hang real low so it isn't a ball bearing swivel attached to the crane swivel.

Wouldn't it be neat if Do-it could come up with a agreement with Ashley to make a "Ashley jig mold".?

Hey Mo, I'll be fishing in the KBFOPEN(kayak bass fishing) next month and I've already got my Mo Magics in two sizes shot up. So I'm a lock to win right? ;D

Unfortunately you might look at the by laws some tournament look at it as live bait  :P all kidding aside I designed it in part for high fishing pressure cold condition. The best advice I can give on that bait is take it to a swimming pool and see the action on the presentation you would like it for. It was designed for crappie, then shakey heads  and now I use it as a jerk bait. Jig trailer, chatter bait ect
