Problems with baits deforming
« on: 02/28/15 20:41 UTC »
I have 3 molds for a silver fish  1 1/2 2  1/2 and 3 inch all have forked tails . I like to shoot 200 at a time or more the problem is the tail roll and stick together and they set up deformed mostly the smaller ones . How do you keep the tails straight I can't straighten the tails as I shoot because I don't have enough time .
I was thinking of shooting all of them and then put them in boiling water and hang them when I have time will this work or is there a better way to go about it .
thankx guy's

That's a bait that can be pulled out of the mold and hung to cure.  I put up Finishing Nails driven into a (usually) wood substrate so I can hang the mold-shot by the runner...pierce the runner with the nails and hang-cure.  No boiling water needed.

The problem is the mold and getting too hot. I had that 3" bait and the more I shot in succession the more the dents became worse. If I picked the mold up stone cold and shot it three times, no sweat. As soon as the mold took some heat the dents began and nothing would get rid of them except cooling the mold down to a cold state.

Topping off the sprue was futile. Leaving the baits in the mold longer only worsened the problem. Shooting cooler plastic didn't cut it. I'm of the opinion that hanging the baits won't help any either.

As Mo said, he can throw them in water of he "doesn't have time", or he can take the time to set/hang them as they come out of the mold.  MAYBE he can oil the cavities so the baits come out pre-oiled and not sticky(?).

Thanks for opening my eyes BKJ. lol Its one of those I don't want to be awake days.

Denting is an issue with those baits anyway.

I don't think oiling the mold will help with the curling tails, Right out of the mold this plastic has a lot of static and surface tension that causes the sticking. The feathering  or tapering of the thin portions of the tails help with the curling issue. I had to lay the baits straight and use a thin skewer to open up and lay the tails membranes flat or they'd be a headache later on.

Thanks guys they don't dent anymore I had to open the runner with a drill bit I think 3/8 inch really don't have a problem with dents . It's the tail that comes together and sticks I try throwing them in water but it just set them up faster and the tails would be deformed that's why I though putting them in hot water would give me time to do it after I was done shooting . But hanging them sounds like a great ideal except for the 1 1/2 bait there on both sides of the runner. Thankx a lot for the tips anymore ideas are welcome .

May be able to split the runner, even more possible now that You've opened it up...You have more plastic work with.
