At least one group of 4 people thought today was a great day for some ice fishing. However, a week of temps at or near 60 degrees does funny things to ice as this group found out on a Rochester lake/reclaimed sand pit. Judging by what the news coverage showed, they went thru as they approached the edge of the ice sheet near a beach area with deep water. The beach has a spring that helps keep the ice thin unless we get some real serious cold and the ice appeared honeycombed where they took the dip. All 4 got yanked out by other anglers using a long tree limb. One was an adult....sorta. The others were just kids. I still have a hard time feeling sorry for the sap that would take kids out on a lake known for it spring activity when ice conditions warrant keeping the butt off of the ice. That dip wad ought to get slapped up side the head.
I've been thru the ice three times in my life and all were my own fault. The last kerplunk I did was at this same lake. I quit ice fishing about 4 years ago after watching another person darned near drown after going thru. I just don't need fish that bad and the grocery store sells some darned good cod if I want fresh fish and can't go. Taking those kids out of bad ice is just not smart. Personally I think the idiot should get a legal reaming.
