Craft Fur Finesse Flipping Jigs

I've been tying a bunch of these getting ready for ice out!!! Last year we did good at the end of the season on these only they were tied on 1/4oz ball heads with a larger weed guard and it was a little too much for the spots we found fish on. So, based on what happened last year I decided to make some changes, I went with a 3/16oz head as the 1/4 was good but I'm thinking a slightly slower fall will help, and I used an FG-12 weed guard as the cover we fished amounted to some small limbs off of brush piles that have been moved and only some sticks remain. Anyway, here they are, I'm hoping these work well as they are going to have some Zoom Super Chunk Jr.s on the back as trailers. The top one is black and fluorescent blue, the middle is green pumpkin camo, and the bottom is PB&J and there are two others I didn't take a picture of, and they are black and chartreuse and watermelon camo, let me know what you think, good or bad.

I like them. It will be interesting to see which colors work. I usually get stuck on all black bucktail or rabbit jigs with pork frogs.

Denny, Fatman was and still is my mentor! I'm all about bass baits and I was tying buck tail and rabbit for quite some time but Fatman helped me tremendously with smaller crappie baits and learning new materials like marabou and chenille. The guys over a jig craft do a wonderful job, some of the best jig and fly tying people I ever saw. Those guys really made me better and Fatman always pushed and inspired me with some of his creations, if it wasn't for him my fishing wouldn't be as diverse as I found a few jigs that really produce especially in cold water, at those would be impossible to do on my own as they are made with material I never used until 3 or 4 years ago.

  I'd take that camo one with a 3 inch twin tail grub in a watermelon and fish it like it's the only bait I owned. On a rocky points or around bridges smallies and spots would be all over that thing.

To me, it's always refreshing to read posts like this.  You are publicly honoring Fatman and giving him the credit for making you a better angler and tier.  As a result, he probably puffed up his chest a little bit and felt a little better about himself.  Giving credit where credit is due seems to permeate this forum and is just one of many reasons why it continues to grow.  Good post, Dan.

I think I heard a thud when he hit the floor.  But you're right. Fatman does some things with head paint that few have ever come close to.

Wow thanks guys!!!  I've learned a lot of stuff on powder painting from others and just worked hard at it, and my own tying started with simple bucktail jigs for my Uncle.  but when I started fly fishing and tying flies it gave me a bunch of insight as to how the materials would work on jigs. 

Thanks again!!!  Now I just have to get out of this tying funk I"M in!!  I've poured, painted and bought lots of stuff, dyed feathers but, just haven't tied any!!

No thanks is needed Fatman, what you do is what I try to emulate, you took what you learned from someone else and passed it along. To someone like yourself it doesn't sound like much but a lot of people who learned decide that the information is too valuable to just put out there so they hide it and answer questions in a vague manner. I now try to pass along stuff I learned to make it easier for the next person just like Fatman did for me when it came to tying jigs, and that is something I'll never forget and I truly appreciate it. That is also the reason I post a description of my jigs along with the materials I used so if someone gets inspired by something they like, they now have a basic understanding of what is needed to make the jig or lure and I will always make myself available to answer any questions along the way as it was done for me.

I tried craft fur about 30 years ago and had nightmares from matting so bad that even re-soaking wouldn't allow it to fluff out again. Today's imitation stuff is so much better. I use quite a bit of the craft fur in small jigs used for sunfish in the fall. Let the jigs dry, then give the fur a flick with a fingernail and they're right back to where it was to start. The ones in the picture are nice pieces of work. I know the smallies at our local lake would smack those.
