injector information
« on: 04/10/15 15:40 UTC »
I just received a new injector and want to know how it is properly used and maintained. I know that you have to use worm oil or softener to clean it but how exactly is that done? Also, what about o-rings when and how do I need to clean/replace them? Thanks in advance!

Here is an old post about the subject that might help http://custombaits.com/index.php?topic=1226.msg7842#msg7842
I clean mine once every couple months by taking it apart and running a paper towel through it, I oil the O ring with worm oil when needed and replace it if it quits running smooth.

I use WD-40 to clean the metal parts of the injector. It removes old pieces of plastic great! Some say it will dry rot the rings over time, so remove them before cleaning, then lube with worm oil.

My injectors get a quick clean before every session. I work on the principle....a little clean often saves me a heap of time.
Now when I say clean, I literally just remove the nozzle and the plunger, run a clean rag through it once or twice, re-fit the plunger, add a drop or two of worm oil to the o-ring, re-fit the nozzle , and away you go.

I will say though I am a bit of a neat freak. I like working in a clean shop and all my tools need to be the same. Some may say this is a bit over board, but that's just the way I do-it ;)

My injector is 5years old and has been apart for cleaning three times and the rings have never been replaced. It shoots like a trooper. I do lube it though using worm oil or raw plastic. When using the raw plastic it gets wiped very thoroughly though, I don't leave the parts wet with it.

Personally I do not use any salt , silica or weighting additives to my plastic other than for hand pouring. I do believe t hat those components will foster more wear on injectors and maintaining the tool on a regular basis will go a long way to having a tool that works well for you.
