Northern Style Swim Jigs

Here are some "Northern" style swim jigs I did for an upcoming trip. These are 1/4oz swim jigs with a 4/0 light wire hook and 22 strand skirt in my newest patterns. The top bait is my "Spring Peeper" pattern and is done by using a white base coat and then going over it with pearl pepper and candy green on the back. The skirt is 12 strands of green glimmer ( pearl with green tint and sparse black flake), and 5 strands each of money maker and lime green, I used the money maker to have a darker element for a little contrast. The bottom bait is my take on "Lavender Shad", it is done by using a white base coat and then going over it with a light layer of alewive, and finished with junebug on the back. The skirt consist of 12 strands of purple glimmer (pearl with purple tint and sparse black flake), 5 strands each of clear blue crystal and metallic purple, I used the clear blue crystal to help add some flash without taking away from the purple glimmer as the paint has a bit of a metallic look to it.

They look great! That purple and white would really be the ticket around here (Emerald shiners).

I also make them without the weed guards.

For the ones that don't have a trailer I often put on a small stinger hook. Smallmouth sometimes like to kill or stun the bait before the eat it and the stinger hook can make a big difference.

For some real fun...tie on some white nylon anchor rope and fish for Gar! Just make sure you have some good gloves, a mouth spreader and a comb to get the nylon untangled out of their teeth. I normally cut the hook off at the bend so I don't get hooked trying to get it out of the gar. Those buggers can breath air and will keep trying to bite you!

Great swim jig what length trailer do you use. I have had good success with 4" paddle tail's or twister type grubs.

those maybe show up better. I tip em with cut up minnow or send em down nude. Sometimes when I troll with them I put another Williams blade ahead of the rig just a few inches for more flash.

Thanks guys, I'm in bait making mode the last 2 weeks and every year I like to try to come up with a new pattern to try out. WALLEYE WACKER, I generally use 3.5", 3.75" and 4" baits for almost all of my swim jigs, even the heavy hook models, any longer and it doesn't seem to work as well in my waters.

It's really good having you here, Johnn.  Amazing work.  Vivid colors.  The feathers, the beads, the flash, the hair, the photography....simply a class act and I thank you for sharing it.  We have many talented bait makers on this forum and it's not uncommon for threads to get hijacked.  We just get excited about certain things and the threads take off on tangents as if they had a life of their own.  It's all good.  No harm, no foul.

BTW...we try not to get Tom too excited.  He's getting up in years and his idea of an exciting day is picking glitter out of his shag carpet.
