The original technique using a float and lure was called float & fly
. I saw a Jerry McGinnis show with him and an 85 yo angler fishing a trout fly in 20' of water under a float. The leader was 10' and fish were caught. I used the same with a 1/16 oz ball head jig and my own flat tail minnow and caught a dozen crappy and a pickerel in the same area. The lure is 2"-2.5" for float fishing and the thin tail quivers when the float moves on the surface from surface ripples.
I also caught fish in the same area vertical jigging just off bottom and casting around the boat as far as I could cast.(20' and greater)
