if your into smallies   you cant beat   lk.st.clair  we get 7lbers a lot....there every where  easy pickin....erie is hot to....

  My personal opinion is I wouldn't go. You could fish in some of the small bays and find good largemouth but the big lake can get nasty fast. I've seen just boat traffic make three and four footers. So even if it's a nice calm day you have to figure on that on your way back in. I have a 20 foot Ranger with a 225 Merc and I watch that weather like a hawk.

your good with that size boat...I fish a 19 ft stratus vlo and run st clair,erie all day..my son has a 16 ft flat bottom with a 40hp and we run that...now your not going out in a very windy day but we go a lot. with both boats....for bass we fish the cannals and do great in the spring   a lot of big largemouth and smalls...try the mile rds.if your fishing st clair .  that's a good start..the best thing to do is buy a map of the lake with the launches on it...drive to you spot and launch from there...we really like the Clinton river launch..we pull a lot of smallie from there....spring and fall is best....don't be afraid to go...its really not that bad and in the river the bigger boats just troll by with no wake...that's the good thing....

I'm a big fan of Erie smallies... waves from other boats don't bother me because they can be somewhat navigated; on the other hand, the wind can completely ruin a trip because there is no getting around that rough water.   If you can go on calm days a 16ft is fine, but on the rough day a 30-40ft charter almost isn't enough.  Like Lamar said, be intimate with the weather.

Thanks guys I'm not used to that big of water. Don't have any here and most of my trips are to the glacial lakes region in South Dakota where  Waubay is the biggest lake we fish and it's around 15000 acres I think most others are in the 1000 to 2000 acre class.
