A little piece of history
« on: 11/13/15 11:35 UTC »
I think we all like to see or find or have something that is a piece of where we come from. Last night watching tv I had out a box of stuff that came from my Mother's house after she died and this box got shuffled into another and I finally decided to dig thru it. I found this medallion that belonged to my grandfather on my mom's side. He and my grandmother farmed between Stewartville and Chatfield in SE Minnesota and when they got started they farmed with horses. I know that their first tractor was bought in the mid-40's and they still used horses up until his death in 1953. My grandmother often told me how he loved the horses. When I was about 15 my grandmother gave me my grandfather's pocket knife...one he'd carried since the 1920's. I still have that knife stowed away for my grandkids when I am gone. Last night I found this in that box of stuff. Its simple, but again it certains his love of horses.

Here's the flip side....

Its made of silver. And actually about as heavy as a silver dollar. I'll hang onto it. You can buy a cold cocktail with your $7 bucks.

We are all in the process of making our own history, Tom.  Hopefully, down the road our grandkids will hold something we made that will bring a smile to their face.
Until next time.

Carole and I took a couple hours a while ago and drove down to Stewartville and I brought this token. The town is only ten minutes south. I went to the farm bureau and asked about  the token...whether they had any history regarding it. They didn't know anything of it. I asked the city offices if they maybe knew anything but nada. People have suggested maybe something gotten at a fair maybe?

"something gotten at the fair"  That thought crossed my mind right away when I saw it. I remember being at the fair when I was a kid. In the arcade there was a machine where you could put a penny in and it would flatten it and stamp something onto it. The pennies came out flat and oval shaped just like your token. It looks like silver so maybe your GF used a quarter to do something similar ? Dunno, a quarter was a lot of money back then so maybe not ? It could also be a key chain fob companies gave away for buying something ?

It's pretty damn cool whatever it is.

I took it to a gold shop and had it tested and its silver or coin quality for that era. Its heavy but I don't think it is silver dollar heavy.  50 cents maybe. It'll stay in its current condition and get passed on down when I go.
