Trolling plastic baits
« on: 11/25/15 06:34 UTC »
Has anyone tried trolling Fliipin Zips or other plastic baits ? If so, how have you rigged them ? I imagine it's just a matter of matching the right size jig, speed and depth of water but I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to trolling so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I troll them with the trolling motor, about 1.0 mph. Pretty slow. Rig them on a jig head and move them with the rod. Pull the rod forward, let the rod fall back as the boat moves, then pull the bait forward.

I have both the Flip-N-Zip and the Zipper Gobi, I believe identical bodies. Both have ribbed bodies that create a lot of water displacement/buoyancy that requires a substantial jig or rigging weight if the baits are going to be trolled very fast. I have my best luck using these two guys on jigs fished vertical or dragged using the current ot a trolling motor to move very slowly.

I've pulled swim shads on a bottom bouncer with success. But I'm not usually traveling much over 1 mph.

A friend of mine in Florida puts the bait behind a mini planer board at 1 mph  and the bass crush'em.

It was painfully clear after only a few minutes that I was way under gunned in the jig weight department today. Fortunately, cranks were up to the challenge.

I'll be better prepared in the jig dept next time.

Thanks for the advice guys.

The key is to nah the bait track true so I use a small head 1/8 ounce with a small float 2 feet in front of it then 18-24 inches in front of that a 3 way swivel with a big weight. The float helps the jig suspend while trolling an keeps it off the bottom if you stop

This rigging is too southern for northern fish and won't work on our smart fish.  Down your way anything will work. Not so up here.
