5mm tungsten ice fishing teardrop jig

I recently purchased some blank tungsten ice jigs and plan to paint them.  Has anyone had experience/opinion with painting tungsten jigs.  Does vinyl work best?

  There is no reason you can't powder paint them just like a lead one. I got a few blank tungsten jig heads a few years back and it worked fine. Just wondering for an ice fly why tungsten ? Tungsten helps you feel the bottom better but nothing else. Are you fishing the bottom ice fishing ? Sorry just trying to learn new ideas.

Lamar tungsten is great for ice fishing. It gets down fast in deeper water so when fish are biting your not waiting for a light bait to get down. Tungsten is heavier so you can use smaller sizes which is sometimes needed for ice fishing and one thing I like is that tungsten shows up on a flasher way better than lead does. Now I just need some ice here!

Also some states with small sizes like that can't be lead or you can get busted.

I'd be cautious of powder coating. Most of those small jigs are made from powdered tungsten mixed with a resin molded under high pressure. Tungsten has a ridiculous high melting point and the hook would vaporize is tungsten were poured around one. I'm not sure even what a mold could be made from to make the jigs if they could be cast. I've heard different people voice some experiences with the raw ice jigs and painting and the vinyl is what works best and you won't see your $$$ drop off a hook being heated.

My understanding is there are two types of tungsten jigs.
Those from powder and resin and the other which are a cast head with a slot in it.
The hook is then epoxyed in or soldered into the slot.
If they have the soldered in hooks powder paint should work fine. Just watch your temps as soldered often melts at lower temps than pure lead.
If they are epoxyed  then vinyl will be the way to go.
Be sure and post a follow up report when you get some done.

All you gotta do is use a self etching primer it works great and you can put any color on after that that works with the primer
