UnderSpins
« on: 01/07/16 18:31 UTC »
Underspins have been around for Decades.  The recent Explosion in Popularity (by my knowledge) has led me to scrutinize the Design.  I've never poured nor fished one so the effects of the Components, Weights, and Shapes, has never been observed or realized by me.

What are Your thoughts, Pros and Cons, to the Design as a Whole?

Is it as Snag-resistant as a Classic Spinnerbait?

Is it Stable throughout a Range of Blade Sizes and Styles, or is a Given Weight limited to a Precise Range of Blade Styles/Sizes?

Because of my Pondering, I believe there are a lot of variables and aspects to consider, as usual, but I was looking to get any insight that Yawl Pros would be willing to enlighten with...

What are Your thoughts, Pros and Cons, to the Design as a Whole? The bait is very stable. I like the Do-it design in that I can put on a skirt and fish it like a Swimjig or leave the skirt off and just use a Wutz-it or grub.

Is it as Snag-resistant as a Classic Spinnerbait? Nope....there is an open exposed hook and the spinner riding underneath does not provide any protection. It is NOT a throw it in the trees kind of bait!

Is it Stable throughout a Range of Blade Sizes and Styles, or is a Given Weight limited to a Precise Range of Blade Styles/Sizes?

My experience with it this fall was to match the spinner size to the weight of the bait. I only use Willow blades on it, which is "standard".

I caught a lot of nice bass on this bait this fall and early winter. If the bass are suspended (especially if they are just off the bottom) this bait is KILLER! The smaller sizes would be great on suspended crappies.

The bait is easy to pour. When you close the wire loop onto your swivel use large pliers so that you don't twist the wire. It really doesn't matter though...the blade will run straight even if the wire is a little loose in the body.

AWESOME Post, Andy Sir!  8)

I'd assumed they would be Snag-prone, being without guard, but strange things do happen.

I would be interested in experimenting with Various Aspects of the UnderSpin to observe the effects of the Options, and Fine-Tune some combinations for Various Applications/Presentations.

It definitely seems this offers another Learning Curve, and I'm liking it.

It's more of a fall or winter bait for me. Some times early spring but I prefer other baits then. I like the heavier weights for fishing open water when the fish are suspended deep. You can keep the bait deep yet move it pretty quick and cover a lot of water. Once you find the school of fish you can get your limit fast. The trick is to find the school and then are the fish in this school the size fish your looking for.
