What is Menhaden Oil? What is the purpose for using it with plastic, and do you add it to raw plastic or a bag??

Menhaden oil is extracted ( pressed ) out of menhaden minnows.
( A salt water bait fish ).  It is filtered and processed ( purified ) to one extent or another depending on the processor. For fishing; It can be used as a smell attractant and / or an oil slick generator. Fish oil made from menhaden is also used as a dietary supplement, animal feed, and as a raw material for products such as lipstick.  When processed for "human usages" most of the "good smelly stuff" is processed out. Jason; or one of the other masters would be better qualified to discuss placing it in raw or heated plastic.  I do know it can be blended with worm oil ( and other additives / attractants ) and put in a bag of baits.
They are a net-able inshore fish with a relatively high commercial value.  Atlantic Menhaden are being grossly overfished according to most atlantic sportfishing / ecological groups ( esp. striper fisheries experts ).   They / along with herring / have been stocked in some inland lakes as a baitfish.

WOW! You really know your stuff. With it being a salt water fish, does the scent/attractant work on fresh water fish too?

Just following up to your question: Menhaden Shad works great in freshwater situations
also. Our Company uses Menhaden Shad in a few of our products such as Anise/Shad,
Triple Threat, Grape Shad and Bass Sauce. All of these and many others can be used in hot plastic and added to baits when packaging. Hope this helps.

This was being discussed on another site and the oil can be used in plastic as a scent, but I'd do a small amount in a small batch to see if there are any glitches one needs to become aware of. Personally I'd start with the oil and liquid plastic cold and cook/stir often until the plastic is brought to working temp.I guess smell would be one concern. Cod Liver oil is yet another oil to consider.
