Need Help With my Do-It Bench
« on: 01/15/16 15:46 UTC »
I'm in the process of building my new Do-It myself work station - primarily used for tackle crafting, reloading etc.  Please help me with suggestions on Do's, Don'ts, etc.  Here is a photo of the area (approximately 16' x 8') and a temporary placement of the Tackle Craft Center sign! Formica for the counter tops on the floor.

Take somebody fishing soon!

lol....I was going to say make certain to have plenty of outlets. Never mind.

Is this built on a porch floor? If so, did you insulate under the flooring laid down thus far? What kind of heat are you going to use? And don't forget ventilation.

I'm in the process of building benches that will go in my man cave.

1.  Buy your chair first.

2.  Now build your benches to fit that chair.

3.  I'm going to use 1/16th sheet steel to cover my benches.

4.  Benches are being built with door slabs.  I really resisted the 30" depth but I'm going to use the back portion for storage of components and tools.

5.  VERY important!  Make sure you have two outlets on two circuits at the tackle making bench.  When painting I have the following plugged in.  Hot plate to preheat the stuff, fluid beds, heat gun to set paint, toaster oven.  This overloads a single circuit.

6.  Lots and lots of light.  If you have a Costco close by they have LED shop lights for $30.  These are great and put out a lot of light.

7.  NO BEER when reloading or working with hot lead.

For the walls I'd suggest pre-grooved wall panels. This product comes in standard 4X8 sheets and is about 3/4 to 1 inch thick. Hooks and brackets made specifically for this product make hanging supplies easy to put up wherever there is room and shelving is a snap. The spacing on the grooves is about 4" which allows for a world of adjustability. The product is paintable. If shelving is needed for very heavy storage, standards can be routed into the product vertically and then screwed directly into studs for optimal strength.

Yes!  You don't want to be slumped over at the bench or have to reach or strain.
Don't forget the tunes, the right music can be just the kick in the butt I need to get that project going.

"Don't forget the tunes"....DF

Bingo! And get something with decent speakers. Nothing worse than good tunes on a chinsy set of speakers.

You must be a rookie. :P   It helps the baits to look better. Plus if you have to go to the house and get in the frig the wife knows how many you drank.

1.  Have at least two separate electrical lines...minimum of 30 amps each.

2.  Music is important.  I invested in a BOSE I-phone system...about $200 or so.  Plug your phone into it. Small single speaker...hooked up to Pandora.  Still able to get calls, texts, etc.  sound is fantastic.

3.  Furnish with stuff that is collapsible, if possible...drying racks, etc.  maximize your space.

4.  Vent above the bench.

5.  Electric heater...see #1, above.

6.  Steel sheeting can get really hot if the sun hits it.

7.  Place for scissors, forceps, ice pick, crack pipe, bodkin, pliers, etc all within close reach.  I use a wooden lazy susan type thing that holds most everying.  Look at fly fishing stores...they'll have it.

8.  Heavy bench top.  I use a 1 3/4" solid core framing door, sans hole for nob.  It ain't pretty any more, but it's still solid.

9.  Lots of cabinet space.

Hope this helps.

Until next time.

Thanks Everybody so far!  Lots of stuff I hadn't thought about:

Numerous suggestions on heat = We used in-floor radiant with propane burner - still considering hooking wood burner up to it as well, but arguing with the Mrs. on who is going to feed it! ;)  Going to install wall mount A/C for summer time.

Any suggestions on specific vent hoods, fans, etc. ?????

I seen where a guy built his own out of duct work and a fan. I think he is a member here too. Hope he chimes in. It looked sweet.

I just used a high output fan for a shower stall. It worked great and had a light in it.

A kitchen vent hood for over the range will be the highest CFM for the size. Most have multiple fan speeds and have lights.
