Newbie starter questions
« on: 12/23/11 20:34 UTC »
I'm looking to buy my first mold and had a question about the 12" Stump Thumper injection mold. There is an option for a seperate tail mold, but that isn't needed to make a complete worm with a tail if I just buy the worm mold right? I'm not sure what the extra tail mold is for. Also, with it being a single cavity how long does it take after you inject first worm before you can remove and inject your second.

Thanks in advance,
Dan

The tail mold is to make only a tail section ...

So...you might mold up a bunch of red tails....then place one into the mold..and then inject black. And you are correct you don't need the tail mold...unless you like to make two color baits.... a lot!

You could mold up a red Stump Thumper...cut off the tail (wherever you want)....put it back into the mold and then inject the top.More time consuming...but cheaper. Just keep remelting the leftovers!

Basically, you can un-mold after about a minute.....but be careful of hot plastic in the sprue (the point where you inject). ALWAYS wear gloves!!!! The good ones that Jason sells are great!

Note: After a few worms...your mold will be really hot...so it will be longer between "cool downs" and being able to un-mold the worm. Just be careful!

Keep asking questions....this is a great place to ask any question and everyone from beginner to expert are happy to help!

Keep your work area ventillated and heed the advice on the gloves. A couple years back I had a little mishap with some hot plastic and it took four months for the burns to heal completely. Don't forget to wear some clear safety glasses if you don't wear corrective glasses or if you wear contacts.

I have the 10" ribbontail which obviously is shorter and also much thinner than the Stump Thumper. Mine cools fairly quickly but the ST is much fatter and more plastic so might take longer.
