How many worm colors do you carry?
« on: 12/24/11 10:12 UTC »
When fishing how many colors do you carry in you box? I like grape, watermelon red, green punpkin black, pumpkin and black. This is for worms only, not other plastic baits. Just wondering how many colors you take out in the boat and how it varies across the country.

For worms: (both "regular" and wacky size)
1. Black  (black/red tail also worked really well last year for a few weeks)
2. Blue
3. Watermelon/red flake (my fav)
4. Per Jason's instructions (!)....Clear with silver flake or gunmetal (quickly became my #2)
5. For smallmouth/wacky Electric Snot (Chartreuse with chartreuse and black flake)

For next year...and IF I get good at that darn dual injector/blending block:
6. Baby Bass/pearl
7. CCM Green/chartreuse

The rest of the colors I keep in my tackle boxes in the tackle storage boat I tow behind me  :o

Merry Christmas!

Back when I tournament fished; If i knew it was going to be a worm day; about 25 to thirty.  That is if you counted the different lengths.
If not; 12 to 15.  This was in the days of glitter, but no laminates.
And the colors / lengths would change based on the Lake.

I'm with Andy on this one.  I think I've seen him towing his tackle boat.  Maybe he's seen me too.  I'm the one who's always riding low in the water and unable to get up on plane.  Waaaayyyy too much stuff.

Baby bass, green pumpkin, black with blue flake, natural shad, plum/black laminate, watermelon/red flake, watermelon/green flake, black, pearl/silver flake, etc.

It's an illness.
Until next time.

I keep what is tried and true for my waters..w/m red, pumpkin seed chart, black..clear lake colors. I haven't counted but I'm sure there are a few hundred in my boat. An idea has srung forth, I could melt down some store bought mixed with some raw plastic and make better use of some older plastic.

I am melting / blending out worms from 20 - 25 years ago.  I have several mud bugs from 25 year old remelt blends.  I was somewhat hesitant; but gave it a shot.  A little hardener, a little high temp additive and they worked pretty good.  Smoke off some and smell off some due to added oils and "flavorings"; but the new baits came out well.  Now I have some mud bugs from my favorite colors from 25 years ago.  CCM plastic has blended with all I have tried; so far anyway.

I carry 2 opaqe, Red Shad, Blk and Red, two green colored semi transparent Watrmln/red, Grn pumpkin, and a light brown. My thoughts are with low light conditions color dosen't come into play as much when the sun is high.
I also carry a bottle of charteuse Spike It, I've had a lot of days where a dipped tail will out fish a non dipped one.

Joebass -  The spike it, is it uncented or garlic?  Trying to determine if it was purely sight change; or sight and smell.

So, everyone is as bad as me? One box for small worms, one for large worms, one for crayfish and jig trailers, one for creature baits, one for stick worms, one for ringworms, one for frogs, couple for big swimbaits and small swim baits and don't forget one for the carrots!!  Now we haven't talked about jig heads and hooks! I think will all end up as muscle men. Look out bodybuilders, here come the fishermen!

Don't forget your worm weights, slip shots, egg sinkers, snap swivels, pre-tied leaders, cooler for lunch, and your fishing license....oh and the PLUG   :o

MusklyGary....You got it down to ONE box ...for each type??? WoW....my wife keeps on me about that....but the "what if....." just kills me!

Now this will really drive everyone crazy...should it be a box for each TYPE of bait....or a box for each COLOR...and mix the baits?

I've always kept it by TYPE...but then it dawned on me (slowly...very..very slowly...) that if Watermelon/red flake was the hot color for MadDad's ...shouldn't some of the other baits I'm throwing be the same color? or.......

I'm over thinking it again!

You can only put so many worms in a box and there are only so many places on your boat where you can store your worms.  Mathamatically, then, your space is limited.  I've found a solution to that problem.  In addition to the worm boxes, I've been using those canvas zippered bags that hold about 10 plastic bags.  Each bag can hold about 40 worms.  I've got 7 canvas bags.  So, mathamatically, it works out something like this:

6 worm boxes  +  7 canvas worm bags  =  a whole lot of worms

I think the only logical solution is to buy a bigger boat.
Until next time.
