eye dip
« on: 12/25/11 10:00 UTC »
On the small fry eyes, I have begun to dip the entire body to the tail junction in the cover dip so I don't end up with a seam half way back thru the bait's body. It seems to give the body colors a little more depth too. How far back on these baits do others of you dip?

I only dip pass the eyes. I don't think it really matters, as long as the bait action remains the same. Just the way I started to do it on other baits and so I do the same on all of them.

No doubt it gives the bait colors more depth and as long as it doesn't affect the action (like on a full dipped swimbait), I like the look it gives.

Just takes more time to do and plastic!

On the frogs I dip right up to the end of the body, and on other baits I usually dip just past the eye.  Like Jim said, as long as the action is not affected...
Another nice thing about dipping, especially on the frogs, is the fact that extra layer of plastic not only looks nice and gives a great finished appearance, but also adds durability.

I recently started putting eyes on some of my CCM Gliders (using fabric paint) and then dipped them to the tail and it makes it look like an entirely different bait! The dip really adds some "depth" to the look of the bait. I'm probably going to dip a lot of them even without eyes.

No...only dipped the body just short of the tail.

Here's a link to a pic:

Do you think dipped baits get more strikes?  They look "slicker" in the air; but does it enhance their look in the water?  I know the Croakers and Toads LOOK neater dipped, but does dipping provide value beyond keeping the eyes in place?  All the molds I inject are in slick finished molds; so I have very limited knowledge of dipped vs undipped baits.  I put my eyes on the jigheads.

That was my point on the action. If you cover ribs on a bait or make a change to the body size, it may change the "action".

Just curious...

"Do you think dipped baits get more strikes?"

Of course they do!!!! ;D

It all comes back to "if you have confidence in a bait....it will catch fish".

I personally think that the big appeal of making your own baits is...if you think it looks good...you'll fish it with confidence and it will produce.

I will have to test the baits more to see if there is any difference in how they work.

Right now every time I cast one out....it just sits there on the surface....
