Try Any New Baits In 2016? Results?
« on: 01/22/17 07:20 UTC »
The 2016 fishing season was not as great as I thought it would be. Strange weather had the bass suspended in deep water just about every time I was out. I could get largemouth to bite my usual offerings but the smallmouth just didn't want to play. In 2015 dead sticking or slow dragging tubes netted me a bunch of nice smallies, in 2016 nothing.  They were not reacting to bottom contact baits at all. Now swimming the tubes I could get bit but I don't like fishing tubes this way, I'm just not that good at it. Then a lightbulb went off, should I go against everything I believe and try a curl tail grub?  Grubs, I hate grubs, never had any success with them, but an Infisherman article about fishing grubs for smallmouth had me rethinking my hatred of one of the most successful soft baits of all time. So I gave in an ordered some 4'' grubs and darter heads from Believe Baits (thanks Denny) and it helped me finish off the season strong.  I was fishing them about a simply as you could, long cast, let it sink to desired depth and a steady retrieve was the ticket.  Do I feel like a boob for not using grubs sooner? you bet!

Here is a well used example of what I was throwing.

Good news for you DF. There are a few grub molds to be released this year with large tails....think big k-grub type tails.

There are a some split tails that will be coming out too. 3" and 4" that I know of. The 4" has the hook slot. In with the molds that were on the give-away table were a couple 3" versions of the split tails [ya'll have seen this one here on the site from time to time most being whipped up with line colors or the hi lite brushing] that appear to be molds which were made to maybe settle on some tool marking in the finished product. The only thing different in them is the tool marking....I've already shot them and trust me I have been over them with my jeweler's loop. They shoot great. I found another ice tickle mold that supposedly needed to have a vent cut a hair deeper. I found a 4" split tail, just one cavity, that has a super thin or narrow tail stem and I assume that is why it was in the discard pile. No problem for me....let those walleye chew the tail off....I know the guy that makes them. lol This particular 4" split tail does not have the hook slot....its a solid body.
Lastly I dug up a what looks to be a 4" ringed worm with a small bead on the end of the tail. The body is almost like a zipper gobi or a zip n flip, just way more streamlined and less bulky thru the center. I'll toss a picture here in a bit. As if the fish will care to critique this bait, there is just a tiny, tiny deviation where the ribs on each side line up.

So DF, if you're in the grub mold market Do-It is going to have you covered.

Efishnc tank tested just about everything that was made, both with a simulated current and in still water and some really good discussions were had regarding all of the baits. For those wondering about the new rippled tube skirts, we had a hard time holding Dave back. Man it fun to see this stuff unfold.

These got my attention real quick.

You can see the not-round profile of the worm and if you look to the far lower right you can see the button I mentioned elsewhere at the tail's end. I took it off on the 3 color number. That 3 color was done using two hand pours in the belly side then the blue injected over the top.

The split tails with the bronze hi lite brush job and the three color smaller ones all measure 2 3/4". The larger split tail has no hook slot and is 4".

All of these molds shoot very easily and the baits they make are sweet.

The belly plastic in the 4" split tail jumped up when I hit the mold with the twin injector and the colors shot under the clear sparkle. Makes for a unique bait, but I was hoping the chartreuse and light smoke would have gone in like the others. Every color seen here is a re-melt.

Thanks ctom, those baits look fantastic!   I will be picking up a grub mold in the near future.  I don't think bass around here see grubs much, it's hard to even find any larger sized grubs locally.  Stick baits and swim baits have pushed them out of favor.
The 3.5 Swim Shad is a bait I would also like to try on the smallmouth, but the one bait I really need to up my game with is spinnerbaits. I have yet to fish any that I feel comfortable with.  After finesse fishing all day, using a spinner bait feels like I'm trying to pull a giant tree branch through the water.

There were several  proto type open pour molds there at the get-together I think you'd jump at D. Got some that would work in salt as well as in fresh water too. It was hard to concentrate on all the new stuff that will be released this year. The Do-It crew have been busy.

Now spinners....you give Denny Welch a shout. If you want his phone number PM me. He and Rosemary make spinners that are out of the world.

Would love to see some more open pour molds!   I have made a couple orders from Denny, I may have to pick his brain sometime about spinners.

For the last 4 years my friends and I have slaughtered the largemouth on grubs. The 3" grub is my favorite. Variety of colors, easy to shoot, easy to fish, perfect for me since I'm kind of simple minded. :D

It's mostly lack of confidence holding me back,  some lures/ techniques (like grubs)  just take me a while to figure out how to work them into my arsenal.

I used to throw spinners about 80% of my time on the water, but now probably only throw them about 20% due to the marked expansion of my Do-it molds in recent years... its a trade-off of sorts, but trust me, spinners are versatile fish catchers, especially in the summer.  I can probably talk for weeks regarding spinners, but the bottom line is my box will never be without them.  (FYI: My number two lead mold is the banana head spinner.)

Not really new for me, but a major resurgence for me this year was an inline (swinging) buzzer.  An uncharacteristically large portion of my smallies this year came from eel grass and this buzzer was the top producer... (large mouth were equally as susceptible on this bait).

DF, I second the nomination of the 3.5" Swim Shad as a go-to plastic when you are after a swimming tail.  Its a grub ... its a shad, it's my multi-function Leatherman tool of swimming tail plastics for Herring heads, bullet heads, arrow heads, spinnerbaits, jig spins, weighted hooks, etc.
