The E core
« on: 02/23/17 15:50 UTC »
I tried my luck using efishs high zuit core shot method and here's what I came up with.

Flippin zip

Thump Grub

3.5" Swim Shad

It went easier than I thought it would. Of the three baits the Flippin Zip turned out the best and pretty much how a guy would want a core shot to turn out like. Though it's a little tedious getting the trimmed body back into the mold. Hint - A little worm oil helps with that a LOT.  I'm real happy with how those turned out.

Knowing I was probably going to have issues with the Thump Grub I only shot one of those.  Making a pin for that bait was a little tricky. I ended up cutting the pin to length then ground one end down to a fine point so it would allow the plastic to fill the mold on the initial shot. That part worked like a champ as far as creating a core space. Since my pin was so tapered ( about 3/4 of an inch and needle sharp) I had to trim the the first long section of the bait off so the core plastic had a large enough opening to flow through. That left me with the head of the bait being the core color plus there was a little blow by as the core color covered a little bit of the main body color. I'm OK with that as I usually cut an inch off the bait when I fish it anyways. If you are looking for a full size Thump Grub that doesn't have a head the same as the core color then the tapered pin probably won't cut it for you.

The Swim Shad too suffered from a little blow by. Though you probably wouldn't know by this picture, the bait on the left is turned out great. The two baits on the right both had blow by issues. Re: Blow by. It's not a deal breaker by any means. The fish won't give a rip one way or another  but if you are looking for perfect results every time then blow by may be an issue.

All the pins I made were made of 1/8" brass rod. For the Flippin Zip, I just cut them to the length I wanted and ground the ends to a rounded end on the bench grinder. They lay right in place no problem - Easy !

The Thump Grub I needed to grind one end as thin as I could to as fine a point as I could. That ended up being about a 3/4" taper. The other end I just rounded off.

The Swim Shad I just ground flat at each end of the pin. That allowed the mold to close completely. It also kept the pins in place , sort of ( LOL )  and allowed enough room for the plastic to flow.

Many thanks to Efish for the great idea.

You're killing skeeters and we're under a blizzard warning now.

Nice looking stuff there 2XL. With the nicer weather we've been able to enjoy of late I have been painting blade baits....for Lake Superior. Real basic paint jobs, but that's all that's needed for that lake.

Very cool to see the evolution and application of this process.

A charturse body with a green core would be a flippin zip killer on walleye!

Thanks all but it's efishnc that deserves all the credit.

So I messed around and whittled up some new pins for the Thump Grub and this is how they turned out.

I think I will make the pins a tad longer as I really only want the last two segments and the tail to be same color as the core.

I am having a bear of time with bubbles today. I'd really like to shoot a transparent no bubble bait with these core shot baits but it's just not happening. Not even close. New plastisol, older plastisol and remelts are all giving me fits.

Bum deal with the weather your way Tom. We MIGHT get an inch of snow out of the deal the weather guessers say and that's fine by me.  I'll swat a Mosquito for you if you think will make you feel any better about the weather.

How are you painting your blades ?  I have been looking into liquid powder paint for my little Tungsten ice fishing jigs.

Nice work. I've been thinking about the tapered pin idea.  I was driving home today thinking if I only had a lathe lol.

I've got a bunch more ideas for this method that I'm gonna work on here this weekend since my rIvers are at flood stage and it looks like a good amount of snow is coming tomorrow.

A bench grinder will get you what you need taper wise. A hand file would too. Heck you could probably chuck up a short  piece of 1/8" brass rod in a Dremel tool and run it over a file lying on your bench if you don't have a bench grinder.  Safety first of course .... LOL

But yeah, short of a mold  already machined to do core shots it seems you pretty much have to have a long thin taper on the  pin to do E cores with the Thump Grub mold.

Follow up: Now all your doing is laying the tube in the mold, closing and shooting. The plastic will go completely around the tube ?

Of the three baits the Flippin Zip turned out the best…

If I were Ronnie Milsap, I might say that’s 99 & 44?100 percent pure love!

Knowing I was probably going to have issues with the Thump Grub I only shot one of those.  Making a pin for that bait was a little tricky.

This is where a good CNC program would come in handy… (HINT!)

I ended up cutting the pin to length then ground one end down to a fine point so it would allow the plastic to fill the mold on the initial shot.

WTG… that's thinking outside the (tackle) box!!!

I had contemplated the Dremel, but decided to meditate on this a bit more… (another option I came up with was to over drill both the pin anchor and the sprue hole, and then back fill the pin anchor with JB, but I wasn't really sold on this either)… now after seeing your mod, I have the fix to eliminate both with minimum problems… leave the rod longer, but just neck it down to allow the plastic to flow around it… maybe even something like what you did for the Swim Shad.

However, a good CNC program would be much less tedious… (HINT, HINT!)

Many thanks to Efish for the great idea.

I started with a reference to a singer and I’ll end with a composer, Georg Friedrich Händel would always give credit where credit was due… Soli Deo Gloria!

I like the name 2XL gives your method efishnc. E-Core. I like it a lot. Efishnc Baits announces the E-Core series 2017.

Beautiful work 2xl, absolutely beautiful.
